This is my first post here. I've been reading the boards for months and just know decided to sign up and start posting. Anyway, I have a few questions.

1. What is knife hunting? Do you just jump out and chop and stab the animal to death?

2. What do you think about the Black Bear Classic as far as a fighting knife? I am intrigued by it's looks and I have heard it handles fast. I plan on having it around for defense in case I should need it, and also for admiring it's sheer beauty.

3. Does anyone know where to find this knife for cheap? I found it at KnifeOutlet.com for $184, and I was wondering if I could find it any cheaper.

4. I also plan on getting a Becker Knife & Tool BK9 for chopping things up, but the handle is a little too slippery for me. Does anyone know how to fix it, yet retain a factory-like appearance?

As to #4, you could just sand the handle until the texure feels right to you.

As for "knife hunting", a very few people do actually use a knife instead of a firearm or bow. Almost always, they hunt wild hogs with a pack of dogs. When the dogs bring the animal to bay, the hunter steps in and stabs the animal to death. Preferably with one clean stroke.

Most "hunting knives" are used to clean, skin and butcher game that has been killed by bullet or arrow.

Re: #4. I read a suggestion recently that one can have the Becker handles sand blasted, provided there is some place you can take them to have it done.

Also, I heard about a custom knife maker who offers micarta replacement scales for the Becker knives, but I can't remember who it was.

I would love to see Camillus offer some alternative replacement scales for the Becker knives. There are so many people who think the original scales are too slippery, it seems they would have a market for replacement scales.

Corgi,

You have probably found the lowest price for the Black Bear Classic. I checked a couple of e-dealers who usually have the lowest prices on everything, and they are asking more than $184.

My problem with the CS knife is the same as I have with the SOG Trident. The price seems a bit high for a knife made from mediocre Aus8 steel. If those knives had 440C blades, then they would probably be worth the price. But I just can't see paying around $200 for an Aus8 knife.

Have you considered the Junglee Hattori Fighter? It is said to be a very good fighting knife, and I have seen it advertised for $135.57 on Blade Matrix. The steel is an improved version of Aus8.

Corgi, I don't know if you already know this but there also may be double-edged CS BBCs available. I don't know if CS still offers that option. I bought one that was made in Japan few years ago. I think the newer BBCs may be made in Taiwan. (This is not a judgement in quality but just one of the ways you can identify the newer from older models).

Yes, the BBC is very fast due to its lightweight and nearly even balance. Although it's not my favorite steel, I've learned to like AUS 8.
