A former client of our good friends at New York's Legal Aid Society is appealing his 3-6 year conviction for possession of an illegal "gravity knife." As too often happens his misdemeanor was upgraded to a felony due to a prior some years ago. LAS is working on an amicus brief supporting the appeal and has asked for help identifying "where it was sold or what make/model it is?" I explained this was a very, very long shot, given the knife involved, but...

If you can provide any of the specific information requested, or a lead, it would be appreciated.

Here's a photo below and a high resolution image can be found at: https://kniferights.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/LAS_Knight_3view.jpg

TIA,

Not to hijack the thread, but how will knowing what brand and where it's sold help?

I can't tell you a brand, or where it's sold. It's a generic China made knife that opens via a thumb stud, not gravity. Such knives are usually sold at Dollar Shops and gas stations. As far as a defense goes my question would be your states definition of a gravity knife. This knife does not open via gravity. It requires a flick of the thumb.

As I noted, odds are long, due to the generic nature of this China-produced folder. In any case, while this is not the thread to discuss it, just to correct your assumption, in New York City you can be arrested, prosecuted and found guilty for carrying a gravity knife if your lockblade folder can be opened by a officer or prosecutor by use of a so-called "wrist flick," even if it takes multiple attempts or gross body movement to accomplish it and even if you cannot do so yourself. We have a 7-year-old federal civil rights lawsuit going that is headed to the Supreme Court now over the prosecution of over 70,000 people on this charge. More info here: https://kniferights.org/legislative...nife-case-appeal-headed-to-u-s-supreme-court/ So as not to derail this particular thread, any further discussion on this issue should probably occur in the Knife Law section.

If any folder pivot screw is loose enough it can open via gravity. Crank it tight enough and it will take two hands.

Acceleration of gravity at the equator: 9.780 m/s/s
Acceleration of gravity at the poles: 9.832 m/s/s
Acceleration of gravity in New York City: NYPD's snappiest wrist flicker currently on duty m/s/s

After drinking a red bull, kids upset him, loosened pivot screw and it's done.
