I have a knife similar to a "kopis" (sp) from Japan. I've no details on it. Is there a forum here in which I can ask for help in identifying it? Thanks.

You could try the sword discussion forum. The moderator there, Robert Marotz, knows a lot about Japanese knives.

Seriously....maybe you could describe it for us?

A kopis is a curvy blade finding its origins in Ancient Greece.

I'll take a few pics tonight and write a brief description and post it tonight. I do not have the level to post pics so will have to e-mail it to those willing. Thanks for the help.

I emailed a pic to Keith so perhaps he will be able to post it here. But here are some of the details...

(1) On one side of the blade it reads:

All Terrain Knife
Previously known as kukri-previously known as kopis
originally designed 300 bc

(2) Then on the other side where the blade meets the handle it reads:

Special Formula
Stainless
hand made by
Sahiro - Japan

(3) The handle is rubber

(4) Blade approx. 12", overall approx. 17 1/2"

(5) It has a lanyard hole in the handle

(6) It has a leather sheath with a snap pocket that has a sharpening stone in it.

Hope that helps. When the pic is up it should be a lot clearer. Thanks for all the help.

It's a copy of the BlackJack marauder that was popular in the mid/late 80's. Sahiro is probably one of the numerous mainly contract knife makers in Japan.

bob beat me to it - it does look like a marauder.

"Made in Japan" does not necessarily equate to a traditional japanese knife/pattern/etc.

The Kopis (also kopesh) is presumed to be one of the ancestors of the khukuri (also kukri).

If you want more info on khukuris in general, we have a forum here on bladeforums just for that:
