Was walking in one of my favorite wood lots today. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted an old rotted log, about 20 yards off the path. Saw a "limb" sticking up that seemed a bit too odd to be natural. Beat a path to it and saw a knife handle sticking out of the log. Pulled out an old skinning blade. The cool thing about where I found it, is that it is an area that was frequented by Walt Whitman and Teddy Roosevelt. In fact, it is in Walt's home town (West Hills, NY) and the trail is known as the Walt Whitman Loop. Rumor has it that Roosevelt used to hike through the woods from his place in Sag Harbor to go visit Whitman. Now, I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but it makes ya wonder!

Far as I can tell, the handle says "Custom 5 1/2". The blade is 6", but if it had a 1/2" choil, that would make sense.

I would also guess it was not there for a super long time, as it's in pretty good shape overall.

Yes that's a Remington skinning knife. Not sure when they started making kitchen knives, but the first iteration of Remington UMC knives was only around from 1920 - late 1939, then its operations were sold to PAL Blade Co so Remington could concentrate on the War. The later versions of Remington didn't restart the kitchen cutlery lines.
