I got this knife as gift. It looks like a SAK knockoff but I'd like to know who made it. It's hard to see, but it has a faint stamp underneath the "germany" stamp. All I can read is "en".

Thanks,

Knife is from after 1989, because before that it would have been marked West Germany. Most likely Wenger MFRd.

eisman, Not necessarily. I have just looked at 4 fixed blades from the 1950-1960 era, and all are marked "Solingen, Germany" or "made in Germany". One is a Fred Mac Overland, a Doppelreh (Double Deer), a Thalson, the last. a Gazelle, made by Krusius and marked "Solingen Germany British Zone. That one should be prior to or around 1956, when the "British Zone" was no longer in effect. John

Perhaps made around 1989. The original Solingen stamp mark on the finished blade stock was removed and instead engraved Germany to recognize the unification.

Here's some Wenger catalog sheets from the 1950's, 60's -

My guess is they were emulating these. Note the old style can openers, no one wanted those after a certain point.

PIC, early 70's, announcing they have the Wenger account -

New style goofy can opener, less reason to make a German copy.
