Knife in Collateral

I was just watching the Tom Cruise movie Collateral. Pretty good movie. There is a scene in a nightclub where Cruise is fighting and he gets his left hand free and pulls what looks like a Sebenza. It's quick but I thought I made out the distinctive cutout for the liner.

I got the DVD tonight for xmass, (due to snow storms my family had to do it late), so I will eagerly await that scene!

I seem to recall he used the knife in the cab to cut the flex cuffs. Maybe someone could get a stop frame of that. The way the knife opened and the way it looks in the shot provided, I would say it is an auto of some type.

They should put this type of stuff in the credits.

The knife isn't shown when he cuts the cuffs, at least to the point where you could get a screenshot of it. I took some screenshots when I rented it the other day (the ones I took aren't any clearer than the ones above), and there wasn't anything to see when he cuts the cuffs.

I do find it amusing that they stuck a switchblade-like sound affect in whenever he "whips it out", even though, if you watch closely, they never do show him opening the knife (off camera). Someone should tell Cruise and Mann that flicking voids a Sebenza's warranty.

Sebenza and HK USP. Very good taste.

Dirk,
I'm tellin' ya, man, it's just a Lefty Sebenza. You can see the gray Ti handle, the lock cutout, the lockbar, the blue thumbstud, etc etc.
In the cab scene, he simply flicks it open quickly. He does the same in the club.

Here is another set of images of the knife-in-question. The first two parts of the pic are from the club, the third portion of the image shows the knife in the cab scene. I adjusted the shadows/highlights in Photoshop to try and make it more visible.

Unless you know of someone who makes Sebenza autos...

I beg to differ. You clearly see him flick it open in the cab scene (just watched it to grab the above caps).

In the club scene, you see a large movement of the wrist but it's so blurry when slowed down it's hard to tell whether he flicked it open right then or not. It does seem like he does though.

The 'click' of the knife is made more audible, true, but he really does flick it open at least once, and I think he does the second time too.

I'll take your word for it, since I can't check (rented, although I'll probably buy it sometime). I seem to remember in the cab scene he flicked it, but the view was blocked by the hood/dash of the car (although it was obvious he was flicking it), and in the club the knife being opened was blocked by his back or something.

BTW, what program do you use for DVD and screen capture? I use PowerDVD, which works OK, but mine came out a bit blurry.

I also used PowerDVD. Most frames of the knife were very blurry in the movie due to his movement. I just clicked frame through frame to find the clearest ones.

With those shots, it is very clear. Sebenza it is! While I like Spyderco, it is nice to see something different then a Spyderco being used.

Aren't lefty Sebenza's kind of rare? I wonder if they flipped the footage?
I doubt the footage is flipped, unless they built a cab from the ground up that was flipped :D

If they had enough of a budget to have Tom Cruise, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jamie Foxx, I'm sure they were able to shell out for a lefty Sebenza :D

That is a Sebenza. If not, somebody is knockin'em off, cuz that sho 'nuff looks mighty Sebbie like to me. :D

I did not see the movie but I do know that it is a common practice to flip footage while editing for the sake of continuity.

Well, Tom Cruise is left handed, so finding him a quality left handed knife doesn't seem too strange. Michael Mann is that kind of director. Plus, the stunt cooridinator happens to be Jeff Imada, of balisong and kali fame.

As far as it being a "leftie" Sebenza, I watched the scene about ten times in slow motion last night, keep in mind. He carries his gun on the right side, his spare magazines and knife are carried "off-side" on the left. And yes T.C. is a southpaw, makes me wonder if he maybe already owns a "leftie" Sebenza so that's why they used one in the movie?????

That's pure speculation on my part, but I remember years ago on Miami Vice that Michael Mann sent Don Johnson and cast to train with real weapons and live ammo on a shooting range, and the gun that Don Johnson shot best with (the ill-fated Bren Ten) became the gun carried by the character.
