I've been reading some of these posts about the accidents that happen to knife makers. Kind of scary, especially the stories about getting a knife stuck in your leg.

Does anyone wear a heavy leather apron when grinding or buffing? Does it offer much protection?

Are there any other ways to protect your body from a flying knife???

I usually wear a leather welding apron when I work. Because of the climate here in Fl, I usually only wear gym shorts and T-shirts under the apron. Combine that with Flip Flop sandles and a dustmask, I make one hell of a fashion statement!!!!
My worst shop accidents have not ivolved flying knives or cuts from the knives. It's always skin to abrasive wounds!! The worst one was leaning my hip into my disk sander!!
I wear the leather apron to have something between my machinery and my_______ besides my gym shorts!

Don't wear apron or gloves. Too restrictive for me. I need to be comfortable when I'm working in the shop. Worst accident so far was profiling on a new 60 Grit. Dipped the blade in water to cool. Leaned into the belt with wet blade. It slipped and my thumbnail was instantly removed. Not a pretty sight.

I read in a previous post about someone mounting a board right behind their buffing wheel. They said it prevented the wheel from carrying the blade clear around and throwing the knife at you if you ever lose your grip.
