Knife in NYC

I am a first time knife buyer in NYC and wanted to start getting into knives. I first wanted to buy a knife that I could stick in my pocket and was relatively cheap and that I could handle easily as a novice. Also, where can I go physically or on the internet to help teach me self-defense with a blade. Thanks

Hey, well first you'd have to specify a fixed blade or a folder and what type you'd want of those. Since your NY state I'm pretty sure balisongs/autos are out of the question.

For a first time knife buyer I would (and other much more knifey people) recommend a Spyderco or a Benchmade for a folder.

Alot of it is what do you like and what do you not like, you might be a more tactical guy or a more traditional knife guy.

Self Defense wise, I would handle knife training in person, the internet/videos are great for learning new tips and tricks, but you need a fair amount of training hands on to be good at something hands on...

Good luck and tell us what you get.

being a college student I can't afford anything too fancy, so what do you guys think about the following blades from Spyderco...
CARA CARA
CROSSBILL
FLIGHT

Oh, I am also going to do the Officer Candidate School for the Marines this summer and wanted to know what/if they teach you about a knife.

I would go with the Cara Cara, if you can spend a few bucks people say get the G-10 handle. I have it in the stainless steel handle with the combination straight and serrated edge, it's really rather nice.

You should enjoy it and tell us what you get.

Carrying a folder of any kind for self defense is a bad choice. It's even worse than carrying a semi-auto without a round chambered. The best way to meet a threat is with the weapon already in your hand. That is very rare, and if that's the case you should be retreating. Realistically, you're going to have to draw it while being attacked. A fixed blade with a guard held in the sheath by tension is the way to go. You need to be able to blindly grap and slash/thrust while on the ground being punched and kicked. Trying to flick a folder open with the thumb stud requires getting a very precise grip and making a very precise movement. You won't have the opportunity. KISS.

well i dont plan on making this blade used for self-defense. I guess I should have made my first post a little clearer. I just wanted an everyday blade, but I also wanted to eventually get some training on some self defense.

Try to handle as many knives as possible and think realistically how it's going to be used. The ones you listed have clips attached. I personally find them very irritating to hold. My everyday pocketknife is a Buck "MiniBuck". It's so small and light it goes in the change pocket of my jeans. It's been discontinued. But they still make some very small, light, inexpensive (less than $30) pocketknives that will be no problem to take everywhere you go. Look at the Nano Bantam ($13) and the Bantam BBW ($16). To get a useful knife you don't have to spend a lot of money.

even if not used for self defense,,,u still need too know what too carry in nyc,,,and stick too one story on the reason why ur carring a knife,,,,just in case,,,
