Ive been thinking about how attached I am to my various knives over time. I notice that the knife relationship takes one of a few predictable courses.
Like-Like: I really liked the knife when I first bought it (OK, truth be told, I lusted after it), and it continues to be one of my favorites after many months/years of use. These knives are the kings of my collection, and are carried the most frequently. Examples: Calvary Sebenza, WH Black & Tan Lancet, Delta Z Maple Burl Osprey, Becker CU7, Gerber AR3.0.
Like-Dislike: I liked the knife when I first bought it, but the infatuation waned (typically now an orphan knife). I rarely use the knife any more, if at all. It doesnt mean the knife is bad, its just that Im not attached to it as much as I once was. Examples: CRKT KFF, Kershaw Chive, CRK Sable IV, Rainbow Leek.
Dislike-Like: I wasnt too sure about this knife when I bought it, but its grown on me, and is now one of my favorites. For some reason, I find that these often seem to be knives with a specialized feature, such as very lightweight, different opening mechanism, etc., that I initially bought just to round out my collection. Examples: Spyderco Delica, Benchmade 690-01, UT6.
Dislike-Dislike: Basically a mistaken purchase. I bought it and thought it would grow on me, but I still dislike it to this day. Need to get rid of it eventually. Thankfully, I dont have too many in this category! Examples: Camillus Arclite, Gigand Spectrum.
One interesting thing I notice after writing this, is that the cost doesnt automatically equate to my degree of infatuation with the knife. I guess that should be a no-brainer, but it is reassuring in some small way.
So, what are your knives that fall into each category?
