Ok so I have been practicing with Dmt stones. I can get the middle really sharp with a nice even scratch pattern. Near the base of the knife however, there is a lot of uneven scratches and it is not as sharp. I tried the sharpie trick and I found that I was hitting the base so I don't understand why it isn't as sharp.

Knife is getting sharp unevenly

Take a close look at the base by sighting along the edge. If there is a bit of recurve at the heel, you'll have a tough time hitting that on a DMT plate. Use real light pressure and many passes. Other factor is the heel usually needs a lot more attention to equal the same amount of grinding the rest of the edge sees in an average pass anyway. I spend about 2x the time I spend working the belly and tip combined.
