I have narrowed my decision for my first kit down to two choices: Either a Simonich cetan kit, or a Boye blade and some of the walnut I have under the bed.

Anyone have any suggestione on how to make this tough decision?
Aaron
ps I will probably get the other one afterwards, if I don't destroy the first.

Hope this doesn't "strip a gear" for you but
Not sure whether this has been mentioned in other threads, but I just read in the April '99 issue of KI where Mike Irie is producing kit blades. The blades are ground and heat treated ready for finishing and "handling".
Mike Irie was featured in an article in the March '99 issue of Blade magazine, and he and his partner Barry Wood were featured in yet another article in the Feb '99 issue of KI. Just a few references to check out there wares. Here is the address to contact him:

Meteogeek...
So are both the Simonich and Boye kits heat treated and ready for finishing and handling. Kit implies that they have all the furnishings: blade, rivets, handle material; and are ready for finishing. It wouldn't make sense to sell a kit with an untreated blade.

Blade blanks are a different matter...some come heat treated and some come untreated; but all you get is the blade.

amacks, the Irie kits looked good in the article, and dont forget that Bob Dozier offers kits of very high quality. I think AG Russell has them..............

Piece of thought: The Boye isn't actually, a kit, he sells his BDS knives unfinished and unhandeled, and I would use my own handle material and spacers. I'm leaning towards getting something really cheap from Texas Knifemakers Supply, and then getting one of Simonich's kits.

Here's the decision: I'm going to get two blades from Texas, and finish them(get the yaya's out). Then I'm about to put in an order for a Talonite Cetan kit from Simonich.

Just a complement for Rob: I have e-mailed him maybe seven times since early november asking kit questions, stuff about different styles and steels. Even though it was obvious that I wasn't going to buy anything expensive, he still responded quickly and politly to all my questions. As I was getting towards my final decision, I posted here, and he responded with...the name of a DIFFERENT maker in whom he thought I might be interested. just my 2 shekels

OF COURSE that damn arms merchant can be nice to you; he foments discord between DC and me, then sells expensive edged weapons to both of us! DC and I are talking about a temporary truce, during which we would make a tactical trip to Montana.

After, of course, DC gets her sword (!) from him. Can you say 'tamashigiri', Rob?? heh heh heh. Walt

double post, sorry

Rob,
I called A.G. Russell and the last kits they had was made by Morseth(?).I asked if they had any of those, and after a brief wait, I was told no. I tried Bob's site, but no e-mail address. If anyone has it or knowledge
on his kits, I would thankful.

Prigger, I am wracking my brain, and as Walt would say, easily done. I cant remember where I seen the Dozier kits, just know that I have seen them. And something I just remembered is that Cold Steel offers a few blades in their Carbon V steel, buckskinner blades but of very good stuff. Ill keep looking!
Walt, I am stringing the wire for the claymores now!

Walt, are you sure you mean 'foment', you haven't been fermenting anything, have you

Knives Illustrated had run a supplement a couple years back about kit knives and it included one on a Bob Dozier knife kit.I contacted Bob Dozier about kit knives, and his wife wrote back and told me that Bob would make me any one of his line of knives as a kit. Prices depended on the size and style of the knife. Phone (501) 756-0023 fax (5010 756-9139. Hope this helps everyone.

Thanks Rob and Striper28 for the info. I myself am trying out some kits, just getting time to do them is my problem.

The Elk Skinner and American Hunter blades from CS are good steel -- Carbon V, excellent for kits. I handled a couple with slabs of moose antler, using epoxy and brass pins (welding rod). My best hunting buddy has peeled several moose with the Elk Skinner I gave him.
