Hey Y'all,
I've never owned a true tomahawk, but have always wanted to get into them. Was looking through knife kits the other day, and saw these: http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?products_id=1371 They call them a "camp hawk" and they look to be of quality. Anyone have one of these? Can anyone tell me how they throw/chop/perform? Sorry if this has been covered before, but I didn't see it when I looked real quick. Thanks in advance,
Jeff W.

Hey Jeff, Et Al;

These are new to the Knife kits website. If I am correct, Darryl Ralph either owns or has some affiliation with the site and the stuff they sell on it. I have bought 4 fixed kit blades from them over the last 6 months and some other little bits and pieces. Every single item I have received was of excellent quality. I am ordering one of their hawks this morning. They are forged which is a plus from the git-go. I just got one of the Cabela's hawks in the mail last week, it was stamped "India" and first appeared to be forged but upon closer inspection it was cast out of some cheap steel. Not a biggie as they don't really cost too much. I can almost guarantee you that the extra five bucks you will spend on the knife kits unit will be money well spent. I will know for sure in a week or so. I am home with a FN broken leg so I will post a detailed review for grins :D It looks like a dream for those modders who cut the hammer off of their CS Trail Hawk, but then half the pleasure is making it your own isn't it? :jerkit: Here are some more photos & the posted "Specs" for your viewing pleasure, maple handle, hand forged, less than $25.00, two pound head :eek:, maybe a little "Top Heavy" but for the price it definitely sounds good to me..

Specifications
Hand Forged Head
Blade Width = 3.75"
Head Length = 7"
Weight = 2lbs
Handle Blank = Maple (Included)
Handle length = 19"

Thanks for the reply Tractorshaft, I have to agree about knifekits being a quality unit. I Buy some of my knife making hardware from them, and everything has been top notch thus far. Looking forward to that review, and I hope your leg heals well.
Jeff

Where are you finding it for less than $25? I am seeing $26.95 + shipping.

I'm ordering one today!!!! It does sound heavy, though.

Mine arrived today and I have to give it a double thumbs down. :grumpy: :thumbdn: :thumbdn:

I am very disappointed. First problem is the eye is formed no where even close to fitting the haft that was shipped. No amount of filing the eye will remedy this problem...the eye is simply too large and it is not evenly formed. Even if I was to construct a new haft, the eye is not symmetrical, so short of heating it up and possibly reforming the eye I don't see much hope towards getting a good haft/eye fit. In addition, this is a heavy head and it is not suitable for the heft and length of the haft which was shipped. Last, there is zero extra haft wood above the head (protruding from the top of the eye). I am certain that, which a few good swings, the head will come off the haft.

I am very disappointed and cannot recommend this unit. :(

well, thats quite a shock. and an even bigger disappointment. Sorry the hawk didn't work out for you, and thank you for the review.
Jeff W.
