Knife kits - where do you start?

I have browsing around several sites looking at knife kits and I found out that there are various types for those who have different levels of skills.

I roughly recall there are three categories - I, II, III.

For a baseline amateur, what do you recommend? And how much would a reasonably good kit cost?

Hey Golok, welcome to the beginning of a neverending obsession. I made a compact camper for my first project, and havent looked back.. Got knife number three tempering as we speak. Anyway the one i bought was around 20 bucks. The clade came tempered and shaped with handle scales and pins with good epoxy. The rest is up to you. I read a pamphlet called "Make the knife you carry" I dont remember who wrote it but it is an informative manual for the first timer. Then just jump in with both feet. I got my kit from atlanta cutlery but most any knifemaker supply should have kits. Also use this forum the guys here are a wealth of information, and they dont laugh at silly questions,trust me i know.Someone on here might even sell a kit or would put you one together.Get ready it is easy to get hooked.

Darrel has done a beautiful job designing these kits. The guys on that forum are the best, they'll help you every step of the way. You'll also get inspired by the work that some of the folks have put into their kits, I'm telling you just flat out gorgeous.

I encourage everyone that's into knives to do at least one kit for themselves. It will really help you appreciate what goes into making a knife.
