Knife Knut in Animated Series

I noticed in at least 4 episodes of the animated series King of the Hill, the lead character, Hank Hill has used some form of knife that it seems the artists were trying to be fairly accurate about.

So far I've seen things that looked like: Buck 110, a red-handled SAK, what appeared to be a stockman pocket knife, and possibly a Gerber-style, blunt-nosed multi-plier. In the multi-plier's case, it was used to save a life.

This is quite a very different way of putting knives before the general viewing public in a positive, non-threatening light.

Hmmmm... I guess I'm going to have to start watching that series.

Yep, I've noticed the same thing on "King." On Sunday night, Hank Hill rescued country crooner Randy Travis from a sinking Winnebego with a Leatherman. Great show! Hank also seems to be a big fan of pocket-sized flashlights.

I just saw a Simpsons rerun that showed Lisa opening a box of yearbooks with an SAK... In school! This one must have been produced before "zero tolerance" I guess...

Also, not animated, but "Malcolm in the Middle" seems pretty "knife as tool"/"good guy knife" positive. There was even one episode where they showed a guy flip open a LARGE balisong, cut open a package, and then put it away like it was no big deal... Cool!

IIRC, the multitool in King of the Hill used by Hank Hill was the Gerber Multiplier... though I could be wrong. I don't remember him opening the handles, but rather slinging the pliers out.

As for Malcom in the Middle, the uber-soldier roomate of Malcom's older brother Francis has been shown with several knives, most notably during the "Survival Training" episode where he took a huge bowie / fighter, camo paint and nothing else. Talk about hard core... it was pretty funny.

A refreshing change from the usual "knives are bad" mentaility we typically see in the media.

I'm afraid someday a balisong shows up in a BG's hand(s).

Rock! Good to hear! I watch the show when I can but hadn't noticed it. If only Boomhauer had some throwing blades. Guess that wouldn't be as positive an image though.
