Knife lanyards just get in the way (tip up carry)

I just bought 50ft of "550" paracord from my neighborhood Army-Navy store, for only $5! Anyway, I made a couple lanyards tonight...

They look cool, but to my dismay, with tip up carry, they like to stick out of my pocket. Some of my knives have the lanyard hole near the back, so it makes more sense for me to fold the lanyard to the backside when the knife is in my pocket, but then when I reach my hand down to slip the knife out of my pocket the lanyard is between my palms and the knife, interfering with the grip! Additionally, if I bend the lanyard to the front by the blade, it may get in the way of the blade opening. Either way, after I slip the knife into my pocket, there is an additional step of placing the lanyard where I want it...just making things more complicated.

I suppose most 2-3" braided lanyards are just for looks, anyway, and not practicality. I can understand how a long lanyard with a loop will be useful in certain situations, mostly with heavily used fixed blades, but perhaps not for folders.

You got jipped. I can get 100' foot for $7 at my Army-Navy store. But to your question I think a lanyard on a folder would be better if the knife were in your back pocket. That's just me though.

I use the lanyard to pull the knife out of the pocket. My ZT MUDD sits very deep in my pocket, so the lanyard makes withdrawal much easier, especially when wearing gloves.

I don't think of them as decoration.

I agree with you. I put a small "hangman's noose" on all my folders. Much easier to get out of the pocket, especially when seated or when wearing gloves.

i always install lanyards on my tip up folders, most of which are waved emersons, it helps ya when drawing ther thing, of course its just a short 2" or so hangmens noose, i dont care for the big flashy ones myself, on anything, fixed//folder/tip up/down whatever.

on a tip down i dont see how they do anything, i always wondered why MT put them on SOCOM and SOCOM elites, i guess they look kinda cool.....?

I usually only put lanyard on knives without clips, as so to make taking them out of the pocket easier.

I carry my folding knives in belt pouches or IWB if the knife has a clip, so the lanyard is useful to easily "extract" them. When carrying IWB sometimes I also make a loop around my belt for extra security (I mean, instead of having the lanyard dangling I tuck the free end under my belt taking care of not tight it too much).

I have observed that a lanyard is useful when it is short (less than 2 inches) so it doesn't get in the way while cutting, or when it is long enough to be wrapped around the hand, wrist or thumb also to prevent obstructions.

Regards.

I Love Lanyards on smaller tip-up knives and FBs for extra grip. I also love them on Tip-up knives I clip on the inside of my boot. For Pocket it can kind of draw unwanted attention. But they do Look really nice. especially with Emerson Skulls and the like. and also the neat weaves like the helix and monkeyballs. Try it. if you don't like it you still have a bunch of paracord for use. Another good use is if your in a crazy knife fight or cut the crap out of yourself, you can unwind it and use it as tourniquet.lol
paracord is great to wrap around the Kydex or regular sheath of a big survival knife so you have extre for shelter building or any of the other 1000s of uses it has out there. Tourniquets too. It's like Duct tape.

And what Orozco said
