Of particular interest to me was this:

California, for example, prohibits carrying of knives into government buildings where the blade is more than four inches long and the blade is fixed, or can be locked open.

and for you DC citizens

Pages 12-13Carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon in your own home carries a punishment of ―a fine of not more than $1,000 or imprisonment for not more than 1 year, or both. Carrying a carving knife to the dining room table in the District of Columbia appears to be a criminal offense.

I'll let you read more on your own!

I honestly don't know why knives are automatically thought of as weapons. I don't consider any of my 100+ knives as weapons. Sure I could use one as such if I chose to, but ANYTHING can be used as weapon. I'm glad there is a community such a this that recognizes knives as tools, not always a weapons.

18 U.S.C. § 930 : US Code - Section 930:
Possession of firearms and dangerous weapons in Federal facilities

Though damn near anything can be a "dangerious weapon" under the loose description in the statute, knives are specifically mentioned. Anything with blade 2.5" or more is a "dangerous weapon", technically same penalty as carrying a heater.

@Colog, the loose answer is "because they can be weapons". What you think of them as is not important. Others will see them as weapons and that is the purpose of politcalliy correct legislation. Of course we cannot outlaw feet or rocks. But the use of a boot, rock or "tactical pen" or "tactical belt" will qualify them as "arms" under any legislation. As arms we have the right to keep and bear them.

I feel the gun folks are missing out on the knife angle. One cannot outlaw knives, because even the @ holes making laws use knives to put hummus on their veggies. The common sense approach is man needs weapons to survive. One cannot and should not take them away. I need my firearms to put food on the table. I need blades to butcher the meat. and the final word is I need these to protect myself from overzealous government.

If I wasn't married with child I would never need store bought protein because I have skills, guns, airguns and knives.

@OhShoot a link to the statute would be very cool. No time to google myself, but that is a good one.

I'm amazed that in most states it's much safer (legally speaking) to carry a loaded pistol than many knives. I guess it shows what lobby money will do.
