Sorry if this has been posted before, but it is a comprehensive list of knife laws for just about every State, County and City in the US and should answer most questions about legality to carry and what blade size, etc...

Note that this list pertains mostly to folding knives.

Actually, speaking for the state of California, that website leaves a lot out and offers next to nothing regarding California's knife laws. There is A LOT more to California's knife laws than that website offers.

Here's my problem with a site like that, and I will use the listing for Los Angeles as my example because I know LA's knife laws very well- the explanation of LA's knife laws is very abbreviated and leaves out important facts.

While it is true that it is illegal to openly carry any knife in Los Angeles with a blade longer than three inches, that website fails to mention that there are exemptions to that length restriction. Specifically, it is legal to openly carry a knife of any length in LA if a person is carrying it for "legitimate" work or recreational purposes, or for religious purposes. If a person were to base their knowledge of LA's knife laws, and their knife choices, on what they read on that website, they might deny themselves their legal right to openly carry a knife with a blade longer than 3 inches.

Personally, I think people are better served by finding their local penal codes online (state, county, city) and actually reading what they say, rather than basing their legal knowledge on material provided on a website with absolutely no official legislative status.

I say, if you want to know the law, then read the law. Not someones interpretation or abbreviated version of the law.

killgar, you are correct in that you don't want to use just that info on Handgunlaw.us as the final word. It is very abbreviated. Most states don't have preemption in their code covering knives. Listing all the laws covering knives would be a full time task for anyone. In fact the Site states This at the very top.

In many states Knife Laws are not well defined. Some states say very little about knives. We have put together information on carrying a folding type knife in your pocket. We consider carrying a knife in this fashion as being concealed. We are not attorneys and post this information as a starting point for you to take up the search even more. Case Law may have a huge influence on knife laws in all the states. Case Law is even harder to find references to. It up to you to know the law.

There are links to other sites that list the laws of the different states and cities. There are links to the state laws giving you areas to start your search in on the state laws. Links to the city/county code and the area to start your search for a particular city/county. Like it states it is just a starting point for your own research.

Stay Safe,
