Here is the thing, for the last couple of weeks I have been trying to find out the knife laws in Canada, specifically Toronto area. What I want to know is what's the law on carrying knives on person? Will I get in any trouble if lets say a police officer stops me and sees I carry a knife?

I know this subject was beaten to the death, but it was of no help whatsoever, and all those links shootist16 posted a few threads up arent giving me an answer to my question whatsoever, I searched the crap out of those sites and havent found ANYTHING that answers my question.

I asked many people about this, and everyone tells me a different story, some say there are no laws in Canada that prohibit you from carying a knife on the street, others say there is a certain "maximum" blade length that is legal, then some say you are NOT allowed to carry knives PERIOD, and this bull goes on and on, leaving me confused even more, I can't get the damn CORRECT answer nowhere. I was also told to simply go to the local police station and ask them, but I dont feel comfortable going to a Police station and asking this type of a question.

Help me out guys?

Thanks

P.S I am not familiar with law terms, so please put it in simple English if you can. :)

Thank you Brooks, that helps a bit. From what I read, I better not get caught carrying a tactical knife, like for example this one....

I must say these laws/rules or whatever you want to call them are quite UN CLEAR. First it says you ARE allowed to carry a fixed blade, or at least there are no laws prohibiting you from doing so, and then it says a Police Officer can take it away from you just "because".

By the way, what's "EDC"?

yes the laws are open to interpetation but so long as you are not carrying it for defensive or ofensive reasons you can carry whatever you want whenever you want. But remember that if you are carrying a machete ect and you say it for cleaning your fingernails ect as a reason. You may be giveing some guff over it but they still cannot take it from you unless you have diplayed it in a aggressive manner if you need anymore info please feel free to ask.

The thing is I like knives, and feels good when you have one attached to your belt, and I am not a criminal or anything like that, but I figure why not carry a knife even for self defence? Hell, chances are even if I was attacked, I wouldnt use the knife, I would try to get out of there as quickly as possible, but it just feels good, gives you some sense of security, if you know what I mean.

If I was approached by a Police officer asking me about a knife I carry, it's obvious a tactical fixed blade is not for opening boxes or cutting cables, so even if I say that as an excuse, I dont think they would buy it, and getting into trouble for simply carrying a knife is not something I want.

i have carried a five inch fixed and a 3inch folder for years and ever time the police ask why i carry it i tell them the same thing it is for utility reasons and the fixed is for the heavy cutting and the folder for the light cutting and even if they dont like it they cannot take my knives or harrase me because the law is the same thought out canada if they dont like it that is there right but it is also my right to carrie it by law and if they dont like it thats there problem so long as i donot carrie it consealed or use it to scare ppl then there is nothing they can do abought it

When you say carry it concealed, that means we can basically carry a knife, but it must be visible entirely?

when i say consealed i mean hidden in the waist band/ down your boot /under your arm ect you must be able to see at least some of the sheath if it is a folder you can put it in your pocket but it is best to carry on your belt if you are worried abought the police giveing you hassles hope this helps

Yeah, that's what I thought, just making sure. I am not a knife nut like most people here are, and my knowledge is minimal, but there is something about knives that I like. I only own one, it's a BENCHMADE Mel Pardue folder. It's my first and only knife so far, but sadly I was ripped off when I bought it, I paid some 250 Canadian dollars for it, but what can I do, newbies get ripped off easily. :) :(

i think that has happened to all of us at one time or another lol any how dont be afraid to ask abought things here on the forums most of the guys here will do what they can to help if you want some good prices try these guys http://www.knifezone.ca/ they are in sask and they seem pretty good to deal with
