Knife laws in Italy, anyone?

My wife an I will be going for a "retirement" tour of Italy in the spring. I have carried weapons for almost all of my life and recently retired from the police dept. I know I can't carry a knife on the plane 'cause I still fly some. I have carried kinves and handguns in checked luggage with no problems here in the States. Can I carry a small non-murderous looking knife (blade less than 2 inches) in Italy? I will also carry a small surefire and tactical pen.

Thanks

I am also curious about this, as I will be going too, though a little later that year.
Really I just like a multitool for fixing things. I use a walking stick and cross pen for defense so that part is covered. I am told it is frowned upon to carry any sort of knife in a pocket or sheath, but that inside a backpack or bag of some sort is acceptable because it is not readily accessible.

I have heard the same, but rumor only. I have thought about emailing the American Embassy, but am a little paranoid.
