Knife laws in South Korea

So my work now has me travelling to South Korea as the new oil rig is being built... Great experience and nice bump in pay but I am unsure as to the knife laws in that country. My research has told me anything under 6cm is fine but other sources told me it is as low as 5.5 cm but for the most part if it is not noticed it is not an issue. I usually carry my bk13 a leatherman Sidkick and a spyderco delica... If anyone can provide input it would greatly be appreciated... I am not too fussy on going to jail in a foreign country... I am way too pretty for that lol

Cheers

I have no idea the knife laws, but where in South Korea are you headed?

I spent ~14 months there, loved the country. Met quite a few Canadians that were there teaching English. I got to travel quite a bit of it, snowboarding, hiking jungles, swimming the beaches, night life, Seoul tower, museums.... Its a good time if you jump in head first LOL

Most the guys I was there with (military) couldnt wait to get home, but then again they limited themselves to right around the bases... I went all over and had a blast.

The beach at Busan is really nice and has an amazing sunrise. Seoul has no shortage on things to see. gambling is big around the country and slot machines could be found all over. Gwangju has some awesome stores and shops, and most of the people are very friendly.

Have a great time bud!!!

I am headed to mokpo and jinhae as far as I know but I am looking forward to the experience of a new culture and bribing an oil rig out of the yard.

I think a spyderco dragon fly will be fine but any fixed blade might be illegal which sucks!

Good luck with that! Stay out of the north country, they don't take too kindly to no foreigners. :grumpy:

Back in the day when my ships pulled in to Korea (and other countries) I would look for examples of local knives. Most were touristy junk, but every now and then I could find some examples of older local work. It was always "interesting" trying to explain what I was looking for.

I lived in Korea for a couple of years: general rule is, when in the cities, if you are a waegook (foreigner) and a cop sees a knife on you, you are in trouble. If you look Korean, it depends on your age and occupation. Old farmer types carry working knives (and nasty looking rice sickles) with no problems. Young guys would not get away with the same, especially in the cities. Middle aged Korean guy in a suit, wearing an expensive watch and driving a fancy car: would probably be OK carrying an arsenal...

I spent 18months in the land of the morning calm with the 2nd ID and have no idea what laws regulate knife carry. This was 90 to 91 and I always had a Buck 110 or Bucklite in a pouch on me belt and never had any problems even when hauled in by the white mice in TDC for beating the hell out of a Katusa and his tanker buddy.Times are different over there now,the hookers are from former soviet republics, not the local ville, and mamasan has been replaced by the Russian mafiya.Probably would be wise to be discreet in your choice til you learn the local laws.

I have a spyderco dragon fly ordered so I think that will be fine as long as it is not obvious on my person... Too bad as I would like to have a becker with me... Funny but according to my research a bk13 is classified as a sword! They might get really bent out of shape if I were to pull out my bk9
