Knife laws in TORONTO Ontario...Canada........? ?

I'm curious though, does Toronto as a city
have specific local ordinances? I have read
the Criminal Code and to my understand there
is NO restriction on blade length for carry
knives (either fixed or folding) as long as
the knife is NOT automatic or operated by a
gravity mechanism.

However, this contradicts what I have heard
time and time again from Toronto police, that
any knife that can be "flipped" or "flicked"
open is illegal (with no mention of how much
effort can be used to do so) and that knives
concealed on your person, given context and
being in the wrong place at the wrong time,
can land you in trouble.

I'd love some clarification on these points!

I've also heard a nasty rumour that some of
the Benchmade AXIS lock shipments have been
getting held up at the border, and Customs is
considering branding the AXIS as a "gravity
operated" mechanism. Anyone hear about this?

Any knife law information for either Toronto
or Ontario much appreciated, as someone who
values carrying a quality tool but wishes to
remain within the bounds of the law...

Re "flicking" knives: this has been explained at length in other posts and it takes too long to explain the law here. We really do have to pick one thread and link the best posts to one place.
Basically, if you can flick it open from a completely closed position, you may very well have a restricted weapon, even if that wasn't the design.
Re Toronto laws on knife length, as far as I am aware there is no bylaw regulating knife length. It is also questionable whether such a bylaw would be intra vires ie, legally valid, but such laws have been upheld elsewhere: however, the penalties for breach of a bylaw are rather different than for breach of the Criminal Code. Still, it is possible that there is something obscure out there on the books or that council will pass something stupid, again.

Sorry for the apparently frequently-asked
question; I'm new to the forums and I have
not seen a lot of locally-relevant content.

Much appreciated,

T.
