Hey, I'm curious about the knife laws in New Jersey. I don't really care about switchblades or automatic knives, so don't bother. But, I would really like to know how big of a knife I can carry, do I have to have it showing, if a cop takes my blade is there anyway I can get it back, ect.
I would really appreciate any info you can give me.

Yeah, you can get your knife back. Just look on ebay for a month after the cop takes it. I think there is a whole section of the forums dedicated to knife laws. See there for more info.

Just Google "new jersey knife laws" and you'll find a bunch of information, including the specifically applicable New Jersey statutes.

From this site Bernard Levine's link:

In NJ, the state police will tell you ANY knife must have a valid reason to be carried....

Repeat after me
"i use it at work to open packages"
"i need a knife this large because it's more comfortable in my hand"
"i need assisted opening because i play too many video games and my thumbs hurt a lot"

Repeat after me:
" Put your hands behind your back"
" Sorry I need this arrest it is near the end of the month"
" This looks like a weapon to me, and the judge will listen to me and not you"

Sorry, but after years as a LEO I bet my three quotes will win....Sorry, I just couldn't resist......

thanks, I've never had any problems with the law, but I still want to know what my rights are.
Rights? Well, probably none, at least as far as SCOTUS is concerned. The Heller case that everyone is so fond of quoting refers to the right to keep firearms in one's home. SCOTUS did not address the issue of carrying weapons on the street or in any public place. That said, I would concentrate on effective concealment methods. Remove any pocket clips and carry your folder deep in your pocket and you should not have any problems. After you pocket your blade, take a good look at yourself (including profile) in a full-length mirror. If your wife or girlfriend does not have one at home, stop in at the local Wal-Mart. They will have several in their clothing department. You want to be sure that your concealed knife does not "print". LEOs are trained to look for tell-tale signs of concealed weapons and one of the most obvious is the visible outline through clothes (AKA: the "print").
