Ok, I'm new here (hello all :)) and i could really use some help...i live in virginia, and it seems that you can apply for a firearm concealed carry permit, but you can't get one for a knife...does this make any sense??? i just received a beautiful lightfoot custom fixed blade with a nice concealex carry rig, but now i'm afraid to carry the damn thing for fear of getting caught....sheesh....does anybody know any caveats to this legislation?
thanks

Dan,
I don't know about VA, but some states the Concealed carry permit allows a WEAPON, and pistols have to be listed. You CAN carry a knife on the pistol permit - something to check into

I don't think too many low-life scumbags are worried at all about your State's Laws on the concealed carry of ANYTHING. Many States allow the concealed carry of a firearm, but allow no provision for the concealed cary of 'certain' knives. IMO, it all boils down to the words "concealed carry". if you have made the decision to be well protected and to carry a weapon for that purpose and carry it in such a manner so that you do not telegraph that you are, who knows? Are you breaking your State's law and face the possibility of Prosecution? maybe, but in a worst case scenario, I would rather face a jury of my peers than some POS with no regard for life, property, LAW, AND if the horrible happens, and I am placed in a position to defend myself, I would worry about some "knife law" after I have neutralized the threat. No Law has ever stopped a Law-breaker from carrying a knife, a baseball bat,a Mac-10. Maybe it's time for us to become honest "law-breakers" also, the difference being that WE respect life, liberty, and the space and property of others but simply have decided we no longer want to be F**ked with and be in a position to become a VICTIM again. This may sound radical, but if you weigh the option of following law to a TEE and leave your "illegal" protection at home, or carry it so only YOU KNOW, and if you are placed in a position to defend your life, I think common sense dictates DEFENSE OF LIFE and then the invocation of the fifth Ammendment!!!!!.....wolf

I own two knife stores in Virginia. The concealed carry permit is a handgun only permit. Most states are concealed carry for handgun only. I too wish it were different. Virginia has no lenghth law as far as non-concealled carry, You can "conceal" a pocket knife but not a "dirk, dagger, bowie, or like weapon". They consider a butterfly knife as a like weapon to a dirk or dagger. Other than that they seem to be very specific in what is allowed.

Well put wolfmann601,
In Jersey, only ciminals are allowed to own guns
US v Haynes US Supreme Ct stated that a felon registering a handgun
violates his 5th amendment rights. So its ok for THEM not to comply with laws, but WE must.
Screw the laws.

And welcome to the Forums....hope you enjoy!

I usually carry a MT UDT on me at all times. Being a Military LEO the law states I am allowed to carry an auto knife in the performance of my duty. Well, I can be recalled at any time! I don't leave home without it now. I don't whip it out in public just to play with it, and I usually open it behind my leg. Most people don't give it a second look. I have some friends that are County and State police, and they all agree that you would have to be a total prick to give someone in the profession of arms a bad time about carrying a knife of any type. I treat people on the street the same way. The average law abiding citizen on the street? I could care less what they are carrying on them. The guy I caught last week with an open warrant of Obstructing Justice who had a bad Emerson "Flee Market" copy knife is a different story. Especially since he didn't tell me he had the knife till I started to search him. Knife laws are very vague. There is a rather large Grey area in them. Some say you can't carry that particular knife if it is intended to be used as a weapon. Who is to say what you are carrying the knife for. It's your word against thiers. If a cop want's it they are going to take it. When I go into some buildings in D.C. that have security searches, I leave my L-UDT in my truck. You never know. I don't feel like arguing Federal statues with an underpaid nightwatchman. Just be PC in your desisions of what and where to carry and you should be fine. And please remember. A knife is not a weapon unless it is used as one. It is a tool! I don't care what the company who designed it says. I could just as easily harm someone with a .50 cent razor blade as I could with a $400.00 Ultratech. Just my humble oopinion.:)
