After being inspired by several threads on forum members across the various knife selling forums having trouble finding their dream knife (Xm-18, Striders, Sebenza, etc.) despite having the money, I thought I’d put my programming experience to good use and develop a great solution for everyone.

My question to you find gentlemen is would you potentially use a service where you place the knife/knives you’re looking for into a database on our website and then it would then continuously “look” in threads that match your entered data.

For example, let’s say you’re looking for a Rick Hinderer Xm-18 and you don’t want to pay the ridiculous aftermarket costs people are currently listing them for, but you would consider one at under $500. The program would then view the various knife forums (www.jerzeedevil.com/forums/, http://usualsuspect.net/, http://knifeforums.com/forums/, and of course http://bladeforums.com) looking through the new threads that pop up in an effort to find your new knife at/under the price listed all while you are at work, spending time with your family, or fishing like myself.

Keep in mind this is all a rough concept of what the final product will look like but I’ve also considered adding a feature where the program will then email/text you a link to the thread where your new knife is located as soon as it’s located. In addition to that I’ve also toyed with the idea of having the program place an “I’ll take it” so that you can lock in the knife while it’s still available.

Moderators keep in mind I’m not soliciting business, I’m just looking to see if fellow forum members would find value in such a service.

Looking forward to hearing all questions, comments, and suggestions,

Okuma31 :)

Interesting...you didn't even give bladeforums top billing in your list... sad :(

it removes the thrill from the chase. the fact is, no one needs anyrthing. if i want a knife, ill look for one and hope to find it. having a system find it for me is removing the life from the search.

the fact is, no one has ever found satisfaction in "having" the search and the energy involved in wanting is what makes finding a knife so appealing.

I think what most of us find "appealing" is pulling the knife (we have been searching for) from our mailbox!!!:D Even if we didn't have to do much searching for it at all.

No disrespect to Peter but this is more of my line of thinking. Coming from the age of fast food, the internet, and anything else you can think of - I'm a "need it now" type of guy. :p

Interesting idea. I work 60+ hours a week usually and have a family,so I can see the usefulness of a service like this. Usually when I'm looking for a knife by the time I find it in a thread it's already sold. I would be really interested in this program.

That's very inspiring motivation WVDAVE, I think I'll just need a few more posts like this and it'll be worthwhile to create. :D

i think it is an excellent idea! as peter r said, i think there is some fun in searching for knife but ultimately it comes down to the satisfaction of having one in your own hands. i'm more of a "need it now" kind of guy as well. my only idea is...if this service is used by everyone, how will it decide which person to notify first? say two (or more) people are after a sebenza (usually happens around here :D), and they put the name in. will they all get a notification? then its really a game of who can reply to the notification first. just a thought. great idea overall, i still think you should do it.

I'm with Peter. I love searching the forums and hunting for what I want. The hunt is half the fun. Sometimes you stumble upon something that no one else saw when someone has a general title like "knives for sale". In a day and age where everyone wants it now, I like the slow and serious hunt for something rare. Take that away and I may as well just buy what I want from the different shops on the net. It used to be that I had to go to knife shows or gun/knife shows and hunt for a deal. That method went the way of the Dodo when I found all these forums. I still like going to the shows, but the forums have made it easier to find what I want. I don't want it to get too easy.
