Ok, this may sound dumb to some of you, but one of my favorite things about my knives is how I carry them! I grew up on a farm in Louisiana so I carried knives and guns from a very young age. Old timers, bucks and uncle Henry's in the front pocket of my Levis...same as everybody else. But that all changed in 1998 when I moved to Costa Rica.

My life is different down here. I am in the ocean surfing everyday, and often I will go about the day in the same board shorts that I surfed in. Aside from the issues of humidity and all the salt, pocket space is kind of limited. Im always looking for enough space to put my phone, keys and a little cash. Somehow, after moving here, I quit carrying knives altogether.

Well, last year I got a kayak and began doing a lot of saltwater fishing. I realized I needed a pocket knife so I got a couple of cheap gerbers late last year. They both rusted and fell apart pretty quickly so I signed up on blade forums and started asking questions. Ended up with a spyderco dragonfly salt which I love. Now let me get to the point...

This has been a really fun trip this year getting back into carrying knives, but one of the things that has made it really enjoyable is finding practical ways to carry given my location and lifestyle. A typical "pocket" knife just doesn't work for me. So here's what I do...

I carry the dragonfly clipped to a cord around my neck. I make a tiny loop in the cord to clip to so it doesn't slide around on the cord. This has worked awesome for me! I wear it under my tshirt, and as small and light as the dragonfly is, I don't even notice it's there. I come in from fishing and just shower off with the knife around my neck. I only take it off to sleep or surf. This carry method is what got me back into having a knife on me all the time and I love it!

So recently, I decided I wanted a larger blade so I got a manix 2 lightweight. I liked it, but was having a hard time "loving" it because I couldn't come up with a practical way to edc it. I was actually not liking it as much as the dragonfly because I was afraid I wasn't going to carry it. So as usual, I came on here asking for advice and got some great ideas. I made a lanyard and attached a carabiner and my truck key to it. PERFECT! So now, instead of always looking for pocket space for my keys, I just clip my manix inside my waistband and not only are my keys handy, but I've always got my knife on me. It's a total two birds with one stone scenario!

Ok, so like i said in the beginning, this whole rant may sound dumb to some of you, but coming up with these practical ways to carry my knives has really gotten me stoked on knives again! I had just kind of accepted that edc wasnt practical for a surfer in the tropics, but I was wrong. I just had to open my mind a bit. Now I've got two blades on me at all times...and im pretty sure i need MORE! Hehehe. Now I think I need a Spyderco Pacific Salt for my "fishing key clip" :-).

Ok, so how about you guys? I know most probably just stick it in your pocket, but what's your favorite "different" carrying method?

I've always carried a folder in the front right pocket. I also keep a folder in my backpack, and if I need to carry a folder when I don't have pockets for some reason (let me make this clear, I am never without a knife) I'll clip it to my waistband.

One day I'm going to walk around the house in my underpants with a Manix 2 LW clipped to my boxers. IDGAF.

Neck carry a fixed blade (BK24) when ever I am fishing or putz'n around the house. Front left pocked any time I'm at work and not "really" supposed to be carrying a weapon . A multi tool and spare blade in the lunch box.

Ya, I find myself wanting to try a fixed blade for neck carry, but I'm so happy with the dragonfly right now I don't want to take it off! :-)

Alright,
Fixed blades go on my belt, smaller fixed blades go as neck carry, and sometimes in my front right pocket.
Traditional folders always go in front right pocket, and when i carry a clip folder, it always goes iwb, about 4 o'clock position.
And I usually have a vic farmer in my backpack, just in case.
