Knife lube and cleaner

I know there are other threads for this but the newest one I could find was from 2015 and a lot can change in 2 years. I am looking for a good dry lube to use on folding knives and a good cleaner for them too. I would prefer a dry lube because less dust would collect. But if there is a wet lube that is just amazing I might give it a whirl.

Lube with Mineral Oil, just a couple of drops, wipe off any excess.

Clean with hot water and dishwashing soap, shake dry, then lube with mineral oil.

I have always used Sentry Solutions TUF-GLIDE in a bottle and on a Tuff-cloth. It's amazing stuff. Protects against rust, friction in all conditions and temperatures - Displaces water, resists grit and dirt. I use on every knife and all my firearms.

Rem Oil has cleaning and lubing properties, the excess evaporates leaving a thin coat of oil behind.
I use it on all my knives for rust prevention. It will clean glue and other dirt stuck on a blade.
But it's not good if you're going to use a knife for food prep.

I use 99% rubbing alcohol, acetone, and or zippo lighter fluid to clean my knafs.

you don't want a lube and cleaner in one as one. function is not going to be as good as using two separate solutions dedicated in one function each.

tuff glide has been one of the oldest dry lubes available (they also have other lube too). I haven't tried it yet but as mentioned above Nano Pro MT dry lube, which I assume might be better then tuff glide.

im sure someone will mention it, so, avoid nano oil like the plague as its snake oil and Gunk's up bad. people's initial reaction is great then it falls off fast. biggest hype lube with a terrible history everyone neglects.

Rubbing alcohol is what I currently use as a cleaner. And I was kinda wanting to avoid nano oil simply because I think it is overpriced. Some good info here. Have you or anybody else tried froglube? I use it on my guns and read some people use it on their knives too.

frog lube is not for pivots. it will protect the blade from corrosion tho and its food safe. I use fluid film for that tho, keeps rust at bay for much longer. one con with fluid film is that some people are allergic to lanolin, and its lanolin based. other waxes can be used as an alternative too, as waxes will keep rust at bay the longest.

I find 99% alcohol the weakest of the three solutions, plus it drys out your skin fast. but its better than nothing. I often will use it when I'm done cleaning the knife with the chemicals. doubt it matters much, not sure the exact science.

zippo lighter fluid is really handy at removing tape from your knives when cutting boxes up. I got a zippo keychain with some in it and carry it with me when I know I'll be cutting stuff like that.

otherwise I let my knife parts soak in it or the acetone then rub then clean with paper towel or q tip.

I totally agree with your recommendation of the Sentry Solutions products ;) Also for the Brother who was looking for a good dry lube then Sentry Solutions also has a great product called "BP-2000". I use it on the Ball Bearing Lock on my Spyderco Dodo model and it works great.

Another great lube I've had good luck with is Militec 1. I've also used Militec's synthetic grease for quite a few items and it works very well on everything I've used it on. But again as I stated on another thread I'll switch products in a heartbeat if I find anything better than what I'm using now.

I like grease better than dry lube. but it all depends on the knife and the pivot. I use all sorts of types of it. good suggestion. I don't think militec is food safe tho and iirc it smells bad.

speaking of food safe... tuff glide is not food safe but when it dries it technically is, unless it chips off.

The Spyderco "Ball Bearing Locks" I've found work much better with dry lubes. The Sentry Solutions "BP-2000" is a good one. But just about any of the newer PTFE dry lubes I've also had good luck with. The two locking systems of Spyderco's that I've found that dry lube works great on are their Ball Bearing locks and their compression locks.

As far as some of these lubrication products being food safe I do hear what you're saying and it is a very good idea to be cautious. But when I do anything with food I pretty much just use my Spyderco fixed blades with one exception and that's my C-17 Catcherman model which seems to do well with no lube at all for the most part. But I pretty much just use fixed blades in the kitchen anymore. Folders are just a hassle to clean after doing a lot of food processing IMO.

I wish Spyderco would bring back the Catcherman for a Sprint Run if nothing else.

Latama quick release is the best lube I've ever used. It can restore snap to old slipjoints that most (any?) other lubes can't, I haven't tried everything out there but this stuff is gooood. For cleaning depending on the knife & condition I like a combination of toothbrush, toothpick, air compressor and magic eraser.

Cleaning: dawn dish soap, simple green and clp for guns.

Lube: Mil-tec oil, grease and nano-oil (10 weight)

Protectant: all around BEST that I've found IMO is Renaissance wax/polish
