I'm sure a thread about this has been made, but I looked under the maintenance section and couldn't find one. I was just wondering if there is a particular type of lube or oil that any of you might recommend. Also any other information on knife upkeep as far as cleaning and/or sharpening. I have owned knives my whole life but am just now getting into the more pricey blades, so upkeep has become more important.

I just purchased some Chris Reeve Grease for my sebenzas. The grease will work with any knife and is EXCELLENT. A bit on the pricey side, but worth it to me.

Others will chime in to input some cheaper options that work well also.

I use REM Oil for lube after I blow my knives out with compressed air and "rinse" with WD 40.

It's important to note that WD40 alone will not prevent rust.

I bet we don't go too many posts before somebody says mineral oil.

I use Tuf-Glide because it goes on wet but is a dry lube that won't collect dust and grime.

Wait til some of the Hogs chime in and say bacon grease.

IMO CRK grease is the best for the pivot, i use some good ol 3-in-1 for my carbon steel blades to keep them clean and free from rust:D

For rust protection on blades, I use food safe Fluid Film. After trying so many knife lubricants that I have lost count, I have found that the best one for me is Benchmade's Blue Lube.

Mineral oil for my blades (most see kitchen duty) and 3-in-1/Tuf-glide for interior metal parts/mechanisms.

I think I'm going to replace the 3-in-1 and Tuf-glide with Ballistol. That stuff is worshiped on Youtube (Hickok45, Armorychannel, Cutlerylover, etc.).

I got a free tube of militec-1 once... lasts forever and seems to work as advertised, but it stinks. I use mineral oil on my 'food safe' knives as well. I have rem-oil as well but don't like it as much...

I use Break Free CLP on the pivot, and Tuff Glide to protect the majority of the blade from rust. I don't like Tuff Glide for the moving parts because it isn't nearly as effective as liquid lube for smoothness, but it does have the advantage that it turns to a dry film that doesn't attract muck. Perfect for rust protection :)

Another vote for Tuf-Glide and I also use Tri-Flow. I believe the Tuf-Glide is a mineral spirt base and the Tri-Flow is teflon based. Neither would be safe in food prep.

---Boeshield T9 bicycle lube--- is great for the pivot point on folders. It has a parrafin wax base that helps it last long and protect well.

I have been really impressed with how it holds up to salt water when using my Spyderco Salt 1. Even after long periods of time in the ocean the oil still holds to the pivot area and it keeps the action VERY smooth. I think it is the wax base that really makes it unique.

Tools for cleaning:
Q-tips
Tooth/nylon brush
microfiber cloth
Air duster

Oil: BM Blue lube, it does things I've never seen any other oil do. Those that actually use oil like 3-in-1, rem oil, or the like I just don't understand how you do it, I've always found them to attract dirt and make the action sticky. Same for lithium grease.

Sharpening: you might need another thread for that...... lots of options.

I just use WD-40 and 3-in-1 Oil, been using them for 30 years and don't see the need to change now. ;)

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I ended up purchasing this Ballistol stuff. Seemed to be an all in one type of deal instead of two or three different steps. Ill let you know how i like it. Thanks again.

I've been using food oil on my carbon blades (just blade no internal mechanisms. Is that alright? I mean they have not been rusting so....
