im looking for a knife lubricant that is ok to use on a knife that’s sometimes used for food prep. Any suggestions?

For the blade?
Mineral oil.

For the pivot?
Personally, I don’t worry about contamination from the pivot; I use Zero Friction gun oil from a needle dropper.

Blade would obviously be mineral oil and for pivot I use KPL(knife pivot lube). Just switched to their heavy version and really am liking it so far. From what they told me, it's not as food safe as mineral oil but it's also not something that in small quantities will make you sick. Then again the odds of you getting your pivot oil onto your food items are zero, unless ur doing sum weird stuff lol.

It's not worth the risk of contamination. If you must use a folder flush it out completely and use soap and water and get in there good before and after to make sure it's clean.

I would be more concerned with cleaning the blade off first before cutting into an apple or piece of steak or whatever. the pivot shouldnt get anywhere near your food. And then of course rinsing it off afterward.

That's 99% of it, right there^.

If a knife is to be used for food prep, treat it exactly like a kitchen knife. That means a clean & dry blade before use, and then cleaning it afterwards. This could be as simple as wiping down the blade with a paper towel moistened with a little bit of dish soap & water beforehand, and doing the same immediately afterward. If used carefully, the pivot might not need any extra work at all, if the food or it's juices don't get into it.

It shouldn't really matter what's used to lube or protect the blade & pivot, if it can be temporarily cleaned off the blade before using it for food.

I've often just wiped down my folders' blades used in the kitchen with a Windex-moistened paper towel, in lieu of dish soap & water.
