knife magazines

I doubt there are (m)any good TV shows -- about knives or anything else. :D

I gave up knife magazines as I got more interested in websites like Bladeforums, the magazine you can talk back to.

Blade magazine seems decent. But I agree, why pay for and read magazines when you can come straight to the experts here?

The three magazines that I am aware of are Blade, Knives Illustrated and Tactical knives. Of the three the most commonly found around here is Blade.

I like Blade, but I just can't get into Knives Illustrated, I don't know what it is, but I don't like their format, I guess.

no TV shows about knives i am aware of except the HSN guys lol.

the only mag i get is tac knives, its not so great though really, better than the competition though imho.

If there were only one source of knife info available to me, I'd go with Knife World magazine. A partial list of the principles involved, columnists, contributers: C. Houston Price, BR Levine, Frank Trzaska, Mark Zelesky, B.R. Hughes. Printed on newsprint, the pages don't stare back at you. Excellent articles. Heavy on history/old knife companies. A monthly Art Knife centerfold. Club reports, classifieds, a good web site to go along with it.

I do, however, agree with all the above that mentioned this great website.

I've got a subscription to Blade, I find their writing to be about the best in the field (though I can't get Knife WOrld around here... though I'd love to). Good articles, great photography; though not as much on the historical side as I'd like to see.

Knives Illustrated is good, I buy it and read it when it comes out usually, but it's not as good as Blade.

Tactical Knives has some interesting articles, but fails miserably in the editing department. There are more grammatical flaws and spelling errors in TK than in a fifth grader's book report... but it still ain't a bad rag.

EDIT: Just checked out the Knife World website and got myself a free three month trial... I can see myself getting a subscription in about three months though.

In my opinion Knife World is great and Blade magazine is quite good.

My opinion matches Keith's. I like them both, but get more information out of Knife World on a consistant basis than any other knife periodical. One big positive for Blade is the color and insightfull folks who bring a personal touch to their writings. (Darby Neeves, Dexter and Don Guild do a great job for them.) I read both from cover to cover and can not see doing without both. B.R. Hughes wirtes articles for them (Blade and KW) an occasionally KI and I enjoy his efforts also.

I love to get knife magazines, if only to read while taking my evening constitutional. I haven't read any except the ones mentioned. There is also something called blades international thats an online magazine, but I haven't read it.

Knife World is great for older knives, including military. It is (or was) newsprint, not slick paper. Less "modern" knives and reviews.

Blade is overall my favorite, decent writing and pictures, tons of advertisements that can be interesting to look through. Tactical knives is pretty good, obviously the focus is "tactical" knives. I haven't read a Knives Illustrated for a while, but I didn't really like it as much as the others for some reason. I can't even tell you why.

Keep in mind the knife magazines are like the car and gun magazines. They have never seen a knife that wasn't great. They are still fun to read, though.

I am not familiar with Knife World as I never see it around any of the news stands or bookstores where I go to buy magazines. Where do you get it?

Of the other three, Tactical Knives, for all of its many flaws, is the one that I prefer as it has the best coverage of production as opposed to custom knives. It tends to cover what more people can afford to buy for use rather than for collecting and it stresses the user aspet of the knives that it discusses moore than Blade or Knives Illustrated.

Blade and Knives Illustrated do have better articles on custom knife makers, on the knife industry, and on various aspects of blade history. I do wonder sometimes at what Blade seems to have against Spyderco as they almost never mention any Spyderco products in any of their articles.

I had a subscription to Knife World and it is a really good magazine focusing on slipjoints, traditionals etc. - not much about tacticals and such. The only drawback is that it's printed on newspaper stock and doesn't have much eye-appeal. Usually there are nice pics to go with the articles but the printing doesn't do 'em justice.

Blade, Tactical Knives and there's Knives Illustrated, which is not that taht popular. But the first two should do!

Get the NOV issue of Tactical Knives. (on the stands) My Hudson Bay Camp Knife is in there along with some FANTASTIC other examples covering the spectum. :D And it is a good historical read.

Right. That's why forums like this are so important. Take what the magazines say (because a lot of it is the truth, maybe slanted a little, but still mostly true) and research it in more detail here.

I've never bought a knife because of a review in one of the magazines. I use those reviews to see what's out there and if something sparks my interest I'll look into it.

I do enjoy when a knife I own ends up on the cover of one of them though.
