My eleven year old son Dougie has been making knives on his own for the last two years just using my bench grinder. He has probably made 50-100 knives of every shape and size. I want to help him develop this skill beyond the grinder level and would like to be able to visit a knife-maker in the Richmond, VA area to let my son watch the process. We live just west of Richmond in Goochland County.

Does anyone know of a knife maker we could visit in our area? Thanks for the help.

100 knives . I can barely do one. Sorry I cant be of any help, still working on my first.

i think if you do a search in west va, there is a craft center that offers a class, that may be helpful. not sure exactly where it is in w. va, so it couldf possibly be far away.

dougie and anyone else interested, send me an email and i'll send you a state by state listing of knifemakers. just put knifemakers list in the subject line please.

I wouldn't call Yorktown, VA "in the area" but if you are ever headed down this way give me a call.

Sure, the more the merrier. You might want to wait until I get the new press finished! I also need to build another forge like the one I gave you. The one I have now is just adequate.

Maybe this fall/winter/spring we'll have to get together a Southeastern Virginia mini hammer-in. There are a couple chaps in Yorktown, one or two in Hampton, one in Virginia Beach, a couple in Norfolk, and a couple more scattered around between Richmond and Norfolk. About 10 would be a good number. Hot steel, cigars, scotch, steaks and shrimp on the grill..... That should make a nice day.

I'll have to get my act in gear and finish re-building my press.

Thanks for the help all. Ross Norfleet of Providence Forge, VA invited my sons and me down to tour his shop. He was certainly helpful with "getting started" instructions for an eleven year old. He also made both of my boys a knife (out of synthetic handle material) showing us all the steps (except the heating parts) in making a knife from tracing a pattern to cutting it out, to gridning/sanding and buffing. Well worht the trip! Thanks Ross.

ALthough its alittle bit of a drive the Montgomery community college in Troy, NC has 4 day classes that are in a very well outfitted classroom.
I have no doubt after meeting most of the instructors at a NC knifemakers guild meeting he would learn alot.

Better yet bring him down to a Quarterly NC knifemakers guild meeting, its held at the knifemaking college classroom. He would probably meet any potential instructor there to boot.

PS I am alittle far About 3 hours but have an open shop Most Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm where we grind, forge, make damascus, harden, make knives etc..

As the count stated, this is a three year old thread. By now Dougie may have discovered girls....and gone over to the dark side. Since we have not heard from these folks since these three initial contacts, We must assume that the knife fascination has gone elsewhere.

MOVE ALONG FOLKS....NOTHING TO SEE HERE !

OOps, I cant believe I got sucked in. Good catch Stacy and Count. I should have read the Counts whole reply.
