Hello Knifemakers
This Is The First Time I've Come Across This.
While Attending The Knife Expo This Year,i Met A Fella Who Does Very Good Scrimshaw.he Wanted To Know If He Could Do Some Scrim For Me On One Of My Knives. Hears The Catch, Hes Never Done Scrim On Anything Except A Small Piece He Brought To The Show. I Now Have The Knife Done(a Real Cool Boot Dagger) And He Wants Me To Send It,not To His Address But To A Ups Store, because He Has Collage Room Mates.what Woukd You Do.

Run screaming in the opposite direction..... If he's only done the one peice, i don't think I'd want him working on something I'd put a lot of time into. If i'm going to send a knife I've made out, I'd want to be sure it was a reputable, trustworthy person. He may be all of those things, but the sending it to a UPS store sounds pretty dodgy to me. For one, if he decides to keep it, you have no real address to hunt him down at.....
If you really want to give him a shot, how about sending him a handle slab??
Just my 2 cents....

Some of my most rewarding transactions have been based in risk. Some of my most disappointing losses seemed secure and reliable. Risk only what you can afford to lose. There will be losses but, IMHO, the rewards outweigh the losses.

I don't think so. I'd have to develop a relationship with someone and see his work first before possibly losing something I put time and money into. Whenever I have a tough decision like that to make, I usually get quiet and relaxed and then think about how I'd feel doing it and monitoring how it makes me feel. Then I compare that to how I'd feel not doing it and monitor that feeling. If my body tells me no don't do it because that thought feels worse than the other I don't do it.

You could always make a knife with removable scales and just send the scales for the scrim. If it turns bad he can't do much with the slabs and all you need to do is make another set of slabs for your blade :)
