I have been very interested at trying my hand at knife making but was hoping to get some hands on from someone experienced first. Sometime after may I will be going to IOBC at Fort Benning and was wondering if anyone was close by to give me some instruction when the time comes. Thanks, Nate

Yep...There is a group of makers there in Columbus that can lead you astray. Great guys that make some good stuff. We have a group of makers in Georgia that are members of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild ( http://www.georgiaknifemakersguild.com/ ) that get together once a quarter on a Saturday and have demonstrations, lunch, and do most things dealing with making knives. We have both smiths and grinders and some of us do both. The meetings move around the state, but one meeting is often hosted in Columbus at a makers shop. Check out our web site for more information. Charlie and I usually host the February meeting at our shop in Statesboro. You will be more than welcome to attend any of these meetings and get your hands dirty.

There is also a group of us that get together twice a year, usually in the Spring and early Fall at Trackrock Campground in Blairsville GA for a two day Hammer-in. This is a great chance for some hands on instruction in forging blades from guys that love to teach the art. Somebody there will walk you through your first blade and all you need to supply is your safety glasses and some effort. They have been very successful at getting people hooked on this activity and once snagged, there is little hope for a cure. You will never look at a hammer the same way again.

A great way to meet the guys in the Columbus area is through the Georgia Guild, but if you want to come to the Blade Show we can walk you around and introduce you to some other GA makers there.

When you get to Georgia, get in touch with me at Twin Blades and I can get you the information you need on the events coming up.

Thanks a lot for the information. Hope to see you at one of these meetings sooner rather than later.

I will be looking for you. We like a little new blood every now and then. Keeps us old pharts on our toes.

There are some pretty fair knifemakers in Alabama too. Just want to make sure you are up to date on all your shots and have a fresh passport before venturing across the GA/AL border. :D

Oh, don't speak too harsh about them now. I lived in Enterprise and it wasn't too terrible. Transylvania, Louisiana is the worst place in the South I have ever been in. I cannot wait to get to Georgia though, will be glad to see you guys
