Knife Making Focus & Determination

So I just wanted to make a little thread to talk about how this obsessive hobby can really take over your head. I've tried probably 3 different times to make a full step by step knife making video for Youtube, and everytime I get so focused on the build that I forget to keep filming.
Honestly I've learned so much from others videos, and would just like to put one up of my own. That and all these videos regardless of quality seem to get a butt load of views :D
This last time I made it the furthest to the point of heat treating. I realize I could just continue the video with a different knife but, that just wouldn't have the same effect IMO.
Just sharing a little of my frustration with you all and to see if anyone else had so much focus in a build that you forgot about the real world?
I guess sometimes thats a good thing. :p

While it is great that you wish to share the excitement of your new hobby, ask yourself this:
Is a video of an amateur who is still trying to figure things out going to improve the pool on You Tube?

Take a look at your recent posts and one will see that you are still getting things together and trying to learn. Post the video in a year, and it will most likely be useful to another new maker.

For the time being....just enjoy yourself and stay focused.

I completely understand. But I do have to say I've watched very seasoned veterans, professionals videos, all the way down to people just starting out, and I can say even the small guys I've learned a few minor things here and there. Just wanted to make one for fun, with the basics of knifemaking. I couldn't tell you how many knife making videos I've watched and I love catching the new ones. :)

Just for fun heres one I finished up today

As Stacy said, It's great you're enthusiastic about knife making. At the same time, like with so many other things in life, the more you learn, the more you learn you don't know much at all. When I look at some of the work great smiths do, it makes me feel very small. Time is our most precious asset and I'd say, at this point in your journey, it'd be best to focus on learning rather than teaching.

Not trying to stifle your creativity by any means. If you have a new method of doing things or a really good idea, share it. Hell IIRC Aaron Gough hadn't made a ton of knives at the time when he made the video about the filing jig. Look at how many people have benefited from that. That was a really damn good idea though.

Thanks guys. I can probably hold off on the video. I just really love what I'm doing now, and want to share every bit of it with people. I'll keep learning & building....

No way man, do your video! I think it's great that you want to document your knife build. You do what you want to do. If you want to make a video showing how you did things, then do it!

Yea I guess. I'm working on my first bowie & guard right now. So I might wait until I make another simple knife. A little off topic but, does the "want" for trying new things ever go away? And eventually you just build what you build and just change cosmetics? Every knife I do I always want to try something different. From a simple wood handle, to a bolstered knife, now to a large blade with a guard....I should just make each kind a dozen times and get everything "Near" perfect before I go to big projects like this bowie.....but hey, thats not me. :o

I like watching amateur-level knife making videos (and the pros too of course). Everybody does things a little different and we're all working on different kinds of knives. Even if it's not something that should be imitated it can be useful to me. BUT I will admit to myself being skeptical and stubborn. I don't just do whatever I see on youtube. I get Stacy's point that it may not be super helpful to the world to show the wrong way to do things.
