I found a place in Arkansas that is advertising a week long course on knife making. The cost is 500.00 and it is at the Ozark Folk Center. From what I gather you will be guided through making a fixed blade knife. My question is what do you guys think about this? 500.00 is a lot of money to me and I wanted to know if anyone has heard of this place. Sort of looking for references. Any info would help.

If you want to learn how to do something or learn about something a class is a good place to do it. I don't know anything about this particular class but I'm sure you can get some feedback or references if needed. I've done a bunch of reading and looking at pictures about knife making but it has limited application for me. I'm a show me kinda guy. I'm taking a slipjoint class in Texas in a few months.

I imagine I'll learn a truck load, have a great time and maybe make some new friends who have similar interests in knives. I think it'll be a good investment in myself.

Try to contact the Arkansas Knife Maker's Association. They might have some info on the course or instructor/maker teaching the course. Chances are he's a member! Good luck with finding more info on your course.

$500 for the week breaks down to $100 per day (assuming you are only doing 5 business days), and if you will be there for 8 hours each day it seems like a fair price.

Will they provide the materials in that cost also - because if so, the price becomes even more reasonable.

As far as the knife - will you be forging, starting with blanks, or turning old files or saw blades into a knife? Are they going to show you how to use a waterjet / CNC, or is it all handwork?

Is the teacher a respected / known knifemaker?

I agree with Glocktenman - I learn better "hands on" so a class like this holds some value.

Good luck - and post pics of what you make and what your experiences are if you go through with the class.
