Hi could you guys please recommend good quality video/ DVD for knife making there are a few out there but I don't want to spend the money on overlapping information any 2-4 videos that cover it all I' m just a beginner starting off but don't hold back it you got advanced techniques I' ll watch and try to follow. Books are also welcome, How did you guys get started???? Thanks!

I don't mean to sound like a smart-a$$, but over-lapping information from makers is a key to developing as one yourself (IMHO). You take what works for you, and go with it.

Most makers don't do anything the same as the one standing next to them, so in three books or videos, you're likely to find 3 different methods to get to one end result.

As far as stock-removal, I think Loveless's is pretty decent. He comes off like a pompous butt in it... but the overall ideas are pretty clear.

Wayne Goddard's video is real good. He explains a lot about hammer faces and when to use which type. He makes a simple, cable damascus hunter from start to finish and does it in a way just about anybody can do it.

I've got Hrsoulas's video, and I can't stand him. He's full of himself and does all sorts of things in the video that are a waste of time. If you can get past that, it's got a lot of info to get you started. Watching that was the first time I saw damascus welded.

Bill Moran's videos are great for forging. His finishing work is far removed from how most folks do it these days, but still shows you lots of ideas. But I really like his forging.

Wally Hayes katana videos- Very cool, he makes a stock-removal 1050 katana. You could take the steps he uses and simply make a hunter if you weren't into a making a sword.

The videos that were produced to help sell the BladeMaster Grinders were cool, but I haven't seen them in so long I don't remember his methods. They'd be hard to find, but you probably can.

Ed Caffrey has some new DVD's out that I've heard lots of good stuff about (Ed is a friend of mine) but I haven't seen them yet.

Find a local hammer-in and attend, or go to a show and talk with a maker about where to find a meeting of the minds , after you buy a knife. :) Video's are nice , but some humans are a bit more interactive.

I have the video series (two tapes) by Wally Hayes called "Home Workshop
Knifemaking". This is different that the katana tapes. In these tapes he walks you through the making of a tanto style blade and flat ground utility type knife. The are put out by paladen press. If you are interested send me your email and I can get you pics and other info. These have really help get me started. :)

I have three videos for sale or possible trade.... We ( Kim Breed, Gary Wheeler, and Daniel Prentice) have a Grinding video, Cable Damascus, and Forging a Clip Point Bowie.... you can see a section of the video at

thanks.

Bob Loveless video "How To Make Knives" which is excellent . Geno watched it and got hooked on making knives and then just happen to have the good fortune of George Herron being his mentor. Where to find this video now is a good question, anything by Loveless.
