I know this is going to sound very vague, but I'd like
to know how to make a knife or sword, the reason being I'd like
to make one of my own design and just for the satisfaction of knowing. I'd like to know what equipment I'll need, materials and techniques of forging. I'm a complete beginner, so I'd appreciate as much information as anyone is willing to give me.

Exactly. There is another forum just for knife making. Click Here

It's not so much that discussing it here is wrong, but just that you're more likely to get a great response in the knife making forum.

Another good place to start is the local High School.

Most have fully equipped machine shops and foundries, and offer night classes. The class prices are usually low considering your other options.

Plus, the teacher could help you out with your questions on what you'll need, where to buy, etc....

Just a thought.

The Knife Forum has a section for beginners, and you might think about starting with a kit. Koval knife supply has a liner lock folder kit designed by Darrel Ralph for a very reasonable price. Mr. Ralph is, of course, the maker/designer of the eagerly awaited Gemini balisong.

Check in a knife book like 'Knives 2001' and see if any makers live in your area; there's a section that breaks the makers down into states. If so, contact them and tell them what you're up to. Most of the guys I've come in contact with would be happy to have you over to take a look at their shop and show you around a little. If you're interested in the forged blade, contact the American Bladesmith Society. They sponsor 'hammer-ins' around the nation and there might be one in your area...........A couple of additional ideas.
