I know this is going to sound very vague, but I'd like
to know how to make a knife or sword, the reason being I'd like
to make one of my own design and just for the satisfaction of knowing. I'd like to know what equipment I'll need, materials and techniques of forging. I'm a complete beginner, so I'd appreciate as much information as anyone is willing to give me.

I think you're going to need to do a lot of reading first. There are books on knifemaking, several in fact. Haven't slept yet, and what remains of my brain is mush. The knife magazines all carry adds for at least some of the books.

One in particular you might want to get is Wayne Goddards $50 Knifeshop, or something like that. That's if you don't intend to get into it seriously. If you do that, you'll need to buy/build a forge, drill press, maybe a bandsaw, a mill or lathe or both, a good anvil, bench grinders, vices, files, and a host of other things.

If coule prove to be a lot easier and cheaper if you make your knife/sword design, and hire a custom maker to build your knife/sword for you

Good luck.

Stick around and lurk a bit on this forum. What you are asking is a tall order. Most of the equipment that everyone has is an accumulation over the years of doing this. Not only that, the knowledge and the how-to is an accumulation as well. Some folks find their niche at a certain point and make a certain type of blade, others are continuing on still finding it.

Knifemaking is a journey.

From what I can gather from your post, the best suggestion at this time for what you wish to accomplish is to get Jim Hrisoulas' book, "The Complete Bladesmith".
