sudsy,

Here's the process:

Buy the Loveless book "How to make knives"

Buy some hand tools.

Buy a knife kit from www.texasknife.com

Buy all the books written by Wayne Goddard.

Buy some more tools.

Buy some videos.

Buy some more tools.

Make a knife from a bar of steel.

Buy some more tools.

Try to forge a knife from a file.

Buy some more tools.

Sell one knife.

Buy some more tools.

Get a divorce attorney that will help you keep the tools you have.

Buy some more tools.

In no time at all, you'll be just like us.

Steve

right, I would suggest reading all the books you can, and ask lots of questions on these forums. I learned by a lot of errors and it wasn't the most efficient way of starting

Or go about the way I did.

Read Shoptalk forums from the beginning to the end, then ask a lot of extra questions.

Spend money.

Start grinding.

Ask more questions.

Spend money.

Start heat treating.

Ask more questions.

Spend money.

Etc, etc. . . . . . :D

Hey sudsy909, I just finished my first attempt at a knife and I can relate to all your questions since I had the same ones. Luckily, for you and I, people have been making knives for thousands of years, in some cases, with less knowledge and tools than we have today. If I was going to start back at square one, I would have spent more time on the blacksmithing end of things because you can't make a knife properly (or work with steel) without "great heat". I'm spending this winter building a forge and absorbing as much info. from others here as I can.

Many of the other things that come up are kind of "learn as you go" situations. The most efficient way to use a file, drilling straight holes, and such. One of the benefits of this forum is that if you post a problem you're having, you'll probably get a response quicker than any other place on the web. Doing a search may get you what you need in an instant! Stick around here and plan out what you want to do, then go for it!:)
