im really interested in making knives for fun but im not sure the best way to go about getting started. funds are a little low right now so im lookin to keep it cheap and simple. i have access to a kiln for heat treat and im going to use a vise and grinder to make the general blank and then i have a staionary belt sander to finish shaping it. i want to make sheaths for them too but im not sure about how to get started doing that either.

i would appreciate info on good places to buy tools and material, or even a how to site or book(the basics of how to make a knife) any info helps.

1. Read Stickies at top

2. Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop, Revised by Wayne Goddard (Paperback - April 7, 2006)
very basic get started with little equipment. Sound perfect for you. $14 on Amazon,

Go to your local leather shop (Tandy) and ask how can I make a sheath. They have alway been very helpful to me.

Have fun

Good advice above. The stickies are a wealth of information. Anyone here will be more than willing to help out with any questions also.

honestly, knifemaking (not forging, in my case) is expensive. grinder+wheel and platton, belts, sandpaper, band saw, drill press, furnace, maybe a buffer or beadblaster, just to name a few things...

you came to the right forum to get started though. i hope it works out
