Knife Man Walking

Someone told me that clips on knives was the brainchild of Spyderco.

I like clips on knives but more often than not, I find myself reverting to the old-fashioned method of just putting it in a sheath attached to my belt.

I find it less of a hindrance when I am walking, especially when the jeans is slightly snug.

Walking, sitting, lying down or plain running, knife-in-the-sheath does not get in the way, as I have found out.

Some people, I was told, carry their knives in a horizontal position at the back of their waist. Is that uncommon?

Golok,
How DARE you post a knife related topic here at Community?!?!?!
You have over 1,000 posts here at BFC and you really oughta know better.
Since you're a veteran member, I'm afraid that a warning just won't do.

Flabbergasted,

Ooops Sorry, Vampy. I must have hit the wrong button.

Do I dare say the cheque's in the mail? :D :D

I like to carry my Leatherman Pulse horizontal on my belt just to the left of my buckle. Above front left jeans pocket. I carried a knife horizontal small of the back for awhile, but actually had a friend remove it and give it to me later, without my knowledge. Granted, this guy was a fellow Magician, but I am sure there are those less honest who could have done the same. I don't put anything there now, unless covered by clothing. It can also be uncomfortable in the car.
I do not like the idea of two sheaths on my belt. I can't give up the pulse, so a clip it is. Most of the time a slip joint too. If you have a good clip knife, try the back pocket if front is too uncomfortable. I carried an Endura there for years. Can also be an easy target for pickpockets though. Then there are the "Kangaroo pouch" (love it!) "in the pocket sheath" and neck folder sheaths. No need to be uncomfortable! BTW, I nearly always enjoy your posts.

Excellent thread! I generally clip the knife to my front left jeans pocket (I'm always in jeans).

I would like to start carrying my stockman, and it is too big for my pocket. I wonder if there are any nice leather or cordura sheaths that it would fit into....

I think the cell phone pockets that you see these days on pants are the greatest things in the world - and I don't have a cell phone! :D

I carry my Wave in a sheath on my belt, as well as, my Endura SE(and the Native for non-work carry) in a horizontal sheath at the small of my back. The horizontal carry is very comfortable for me, sometimes I forget that it's there.

I do, however, carry my Military PE clipped in my right front pocket. The size of the knife did take some getting used to, in pocket, but I've found that it's the most convenient for my primary blade.

I would have to prefer the sheath carry because you have less chance of losing your blades. I also agree with you, golok, that the sheaths are no hindrance at all when worn on the belt, but for my Millie I made an exception. ;)

I tend to tuck my calypso jr serrated into my waistband and about 4:30. I can bend every direction and sit down without even feeling it.

Last night I had thought I lost it and was frantically patting down my pockets before I realized it was tucked securely and invisibly in my waistband of my jeans.

I have been thinking about taking-off the pocket-clip on my REKAT Sifu and finding a good IWB sheath for it. Any ideas on a good one? (My preference is Cordura, rather than "plastic" or leather).

If the knife can't fit comfortably in my pocket then I use a belt sheath for it. Sal Glesser has done some great things for the knife community, and while clips are very popular with the general public they just arn't functional for my uses.

On occassion I would carry my Tomcat horizontally mounted in its sheath at the back. This is the only knife I ever carried like that. The Tomcat is a whopper...any other carry method would've been too awkward and uncomfortable.

Never even noticed it when carried like that.

I'm not sure exactly why, but I don't care for sheaths. Granted, I have never tried the horizontal kind, which I would like to do sometime. I think people's preference must depend on their particular anatomy.

I can carry almost anything vertically in my rear pocket, up against the outer pocket seam. I also like stuff clipped to my front pants pocket. And at home, I wear sweatpants all fall, winter, and spring. I can slip a folder into the waistband and, as someone mentioned above, not even know that it is there. To each their own.

If I could,I'd always carry a sheath. I carried a knife and then a multi tool on my belt for years and am used to it.

FYI Spyderco was indeed the first factory company to make a folder with a pocket clip on it (they don't call 'em "Clip-Its" for nothin')

I personally find the pocket clip the least obtrusive for me, I would only go to a belt sheath for a pocket clip folder if I was displeased with the clip or if I was planning on doing ALOT of vigorous excercise, otherwise it stays tight in my front pocket.

HI Golok,

You can count me in the sheath gang. Unless I am not wearning a belt, one of my regular knives sits in a horizontal nylon sheath (from TAD). Without any markings, it looks a lot like those cellphone carriers that are common these days which is a plus. I also have a nylon clip-on "kangaroo" sheath which I use occasionally - the wide plastic clip does not wear out my pants as quickly as metal clips.

When I need to bring my Leatherman Supertool along, I slide the leather sheath on my belt, and when I carry a (shhh ...) auto I like to use a sheath for safety, but when I'm using it, I tend to clip it to my right front pocket inbetween uses. I've carried a lot of folders inside the waistband.

Clips can be great, but some knives aren't as well designed for them as the makers seem to think, and they interfere with a comfortable grip.

Hi,

I carry my Spyderco Starmate in a belt sheath (cordura).
The clip would destroy the trousers of my suit in near to no time.
But I find it very usefull to have the clip on the knife; the reason? I can clip it if I find that necessary to wherever I want.
i.e.: I can carry it inside the waistband for a faster withdrawal should the need arise, or when I change to jeans the knife get's clipped on.
In these days everything is wraped twice, so there is often the need for a good knife.

Greetings

I find it very easy to carry my Spyderco Police Model without the clip. I use a custom SOB(small of the back) kydex rig.

I rarely have any use for pocket clips.
