Anyone know if there is any tracking on sales volume by knife manufacturers? It would just be interesting to see who's selling the most knives. I have a feeling Buck might be on top. Also it would be interesting to see the sales volume stats by model on all the various Buck knives. Not looking for how much money they made, but the number of various models sold each year.

We're all our likely puling numbers from various orifices to defend our various pejudiced points of view here, but the following numbers posted today at 20:48PM on ebay may well provide some insight into this question. At that specific time, a total of 14,266 Case knives were listed for sale, compared to only 5,069 Buck Models resulting in 2.81 times greater listings for Case than Buck. Great data you say; Well, are these numbers in any way representative of the actual production numbers of either factory, and, if so, over what period of time? Or maybe Buck owners just prefer to buy and then keep their knives so that not as many are resold on the secondary (ebay) market while more Cases not only go unsold originally but are also regularly resold by a bunch of dissatisfied original buyers as well, and that brings many more of their knives to a secondary marketplace such as ebay. Just a few potential questions to ponder, none of which may be remotely correlated to the discussion at hand, but which I would wager will bright forth some interesting discussion.

By the way, I hereby disclaim this post and would not have written it without two bottles of beer immediately upon my way to bed. :) :thumbup:

Good luck you all, and by the way, this sort of study is routinely used in the medical community to locate trends that might, for example, link high drinkers of diet soda to increased risk for stroke and/or metabolic syndrome as was posted today!!

People who drink a lot of diet soda are usually fat.....therefore, they are at greater risk for stroke or other catastrophic medical problem.

They should have just weighed people for that study.

As for the Buck/Case e-Bay comparison......I'd say it probably just shows that Case has more collectors and more collectible knives than Buck. Case means collecting.

We've always been able to get annual sales numbers for certain Buck models from Joe, but getting totals for all models is not likely.

fat chance of that being announced;
a full public disclosure with actual figures broken down makes it that much easier for competitors to chew on...
but perhaps the best indication of overall business performance is reflected in their annual reports.
so one could read between the lines especially whenever a new product line is launched in a said particular year.
it goes without saying that a manufacturing company would soon be in trouble if it's required to keep changing models every season.
rules are perhaps a little different with knife marketing entities having no manufacturing facilities to speak of..

I don't own any Case knives but I've always wondered why there isn't a forum for Case Collectors on Blade Forum.

All good points. I don't frequent the "knife forum" site but I did notice that Case did have a manufacturer presence with them. I could easily be wrong but I bet the 110, 119 and Vantage models are possibly their top sellers?? At least they are in my wallet!

Firearms and automobile sales and manufacturing by model are traced due to federal reglulations but even that info is usually several years behind when made public. As GIRLYmann stated production statistics would be guarded information by most companies. I would add that Buck is probably the largest domestic manufacturer and that their sales lead other domestic manufacturers' US made knives. But one has to consider that most other domestic manufacturers produce limited product here in the US and import many of their models from overseas. Spyderco, SOG, Kabar, Ontario, Cold Steel, and Gerber have almost all their product line manufacured outside the US. Also some companies like Cold Steel, TOPS and ESEE dont actually manufacture their own knives but have them made under contract by another manufacturer. I thisk there are far more Chinese/Pakistani knives sold everyday for every Buck knife purchased. Major retailers such as Walmart, Cabelas, Wholesale Sports offer far more imported knives than Buck products and probably sell them at a higher volume.
