Hey Guys! dumb question here. I wasn't thinking and I used gun Oil on my carbon steel edc knife that I use for food every now and then. Is there anyway you guys can think of that I could remove the oil and make my knife food safe again?

meh ... no worries. Wash off the blade with a little soapy water, wipe it dry, and apply a little pharmacy-grade mineral oil. Done.

If you've ever changed your car's oil, you've probably ingested more non-food safe oil than you'd ever get off that blade. :D

Another vote for washing with dish soap here. I use olive oil on most of my carbon food blades, It will get sticky after a couple months though if you use it for long term storage.

So you guys think it should be fine to use on food again once I wash several times with dish soap?

yes, a few washes with dish soap should be enough to remove the oil and whatever other chemicals are in it. Dish soap is made to break up and remove grease and oil, and it does an admirable job of it.

They use Dawn dishwashing soap to safely clean oil off of birds after an oil spill. Use it to clean the oil off your knife and quit worrying.

From experience cleaning old, rusty kerosene tubular lanterns, Original Blue Dawn can remove mild rust and old paint on metal surfaces.

I wouldn't even wash "several" times. Once will be enough. Just wash good and you'll be fine. I knew someone when I was in the army who would check his humvees oil and lick the dipstick clean to check it. And I was a mechanic and couldn't tell you how many sandwiches and food I ate with my hands covered in oil and grease. And aside from eating paint chips, running head first into trees and rocking myself to sleep every night im perfectly fine!

I think of my Grandfather. He used his pocketknife for all manner of tasks, including cutting food. I'm sure his blade came into contact with lots of hazardous substances, solvents, industrial cleaning products, lead paints, petroleum products, etc, etc.

He never washed it, just wiped it with a rag, or on his pant leg. He lived to be 90.:)

Yah, don't over think this. You don't wash your kitchen utensils "several times" between use.

My Spyderco Manix LW in S110V cannot be disassembled. When it get's really dirty, I just swish it around in a bucket of hot water and dish soap for a few minutes, shake it dry, use a hair blow dryer for a few minutes, then add a couple of drops of mineral oil on the pivot, work it in, then wipe down the blade with any excess. Done.

You can get pharmacy grade, food safe Mineral Oil at any grocery/drug store's 'laxative' section for $2/pint.

No real need to disassemble the knife. I just wash the blade with a little dish soap and hot water and dry it off.

I would have used some alcohol to clean the blade. You are well covered with responses.

At most the tiny amount of oil residue on your blade might taste funny but it isn't going to hurt you.
