Something like your nightmare happened to me a few months ago.
Someone broke into our house, looking for a gun. I guess they just wanted to kill someone. They didn't get too far, though. I believe the cops picked them up a few blocks away.
Anyways, they basically tore the entire house apart, including my bedroom where I keep my collection.
They didn't take anything but a gun (an old unloaded .38 that I didn't even know was in the house - my landlords brother's gun). Left checkbooks, laptops, money, etc completely alone. They didn't even take any identity/financial type information, which is pretty common crime in Cali right now.
But, they sure did go through my collection. Had almost all of them out on my bed. It looked like they seriously considered taking one knife, as it was seperate from the rest. Maybe they got scared and left it, I don't know.
Out of all the knives I have, the one knife it looks like they wanted was a CRKT Kasper. Pretty funny. I think I paid like $35 for it. I guess they thought it looked tough or something. You would think that they would've taken a more expensive piece.
I guess it was a REALLY good thing they didn't know anything about knives.
It was not a happy day. At least they didnt take anything of mine. I've since moved about half of my collection to a different location.
The first knife I looked for after it happened? My old, beaten Spyderco Endura. I don't know why. I guess it has a lot of sentimental value.
