TL;DR I am a knife noob. Just got my first decent knife. It's a shame no one sells kydex Waves even though they might be a gimmick. Why is this so?

Hi there,
First post on Blade Forums. Apologies ahead of time if I unknowingly violate any of the bylaws of your forums (and for the wall of text).

I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to knives. I'm 21 and I've had pocket knives all my life, but nothing over $30 and nothing I would carry consistently. Recently I've been working part time at a job where having an EDC knife actually comes in handy.

Recently I got tired of crappy folding knives, did some homework and picked up a Spyderco Para 3. It seemed like a pretty solid knife that would not only last, but could be relied on in an emergency. Not to mention it won't scare the SJW indoor-cat students at my university.

A side effect of my knife research was that my Youtube recommend list became filled with assorted knife videos. I can't even open my computer on campus without looking over my shoulder. One day I came across a video about a Delica with a kydex Wave modification. Some people here probably think those are a gimmick. You can certainly open a knife quickly without one, but I thought it was cool. I had to have one. No one sells them, so I decided to make one. Armed with only an amazon account, a razor blade, a cordless drill, a lighter, and a file, here's what I came up with:

For reference, here is the inspiration for my Wave mod

Not a bad first attempt if I do say so myself. It doesn't quite look as pretty, but it is perfectly functional.

My biggest question is why does no one sell these wave mods? Are these not popular enough? Does selling them violate Emerson's trademark/patent?

If someone sold them It would be nice for people like me. Doing fine work on kydex with shitty tools is a pain. Finding the right size chicago screw was a pain. Heating kydex in one's apartment is a no-no.

There’s a company i follow on Instagram, they make metal ones. I know a guy who makes auto sheaths too. Not what you’re talking about but its the next best thing. I sent you a message.

It's probably pretty simple, people who want knives with a wave feature get a knife that has one from the factory. At least that's how I'd do it. I don't have any knife where I think "It would be better with a wave", although I don't need/want a wave feature to begin with, I don't see the benefit since I don't carry for self defense or have any other need where that split second makes any difference.
That being said you executed it quite well.

I did it out of boredom more than anything else. I guess part of the benefit to a wave mod is that you're not married to it. If there happens to be a place that bans them, you can just take it off.

Also Wisemen Fang does look a lot cooler. I heard about their signet rings but I hadn't visited their website. I wish I asked about wave mods here before going to the trouble of making one. took me about 4 days wait on materials, 6 hours work, and $10 in materials to make the one I showed, and I knew it would be a bit of a chore to make. Makes sense that I couldn't find it, everything I searched for was along the lines of "kydex wave", "wave mod", etc.

It's nice to know how to do it, though. And the Fang only fits particular models, while the kydex mod can be made for any Spyderco.

You did a good job on it. There is a company out there that makes a bolt on wave type stud using a thumbstud hole, for knives other than Spyderco, they use injection molded delrin.

You don’t need to say how much you spent on the mod, but just look at the price on your account. Take that, add it to the price of whatever knife you want, and then add on that the manufacturing price (paying someone to put it together). This is one of the times that I’m going to say no to getting a custom one, but that’s because the only other add on mods that I know of are scale mods (and sheaths, but I only have folders now). I’d like to think that because they are outside of my skill set to make, they are worth investing in if you want
