I have a 16 year old brother and loves to oggle my knives and play with them. So i intend to get him his own knife for christmas. Hes left handed but doesnt like thumbholes like on spyder co. I dont want to buy him a piece of crap or spend all my money on him either. So if you could be so kind as to offer a suggestion or 2 of a knife that would be good gift for him i'm all ears.

So I take it he likes thumb studs? How about a Gerber like an AR3.00 or Air Ranger? Left and right-handed, not too cheap not too expensive, a possibility.:D

Something in an axis lock would probably be good. I think the Griptilian has a thumbstud version (although I prefer the thumbhole version). Which knife of yours does he like best?

I dont have a big selection as of yet, i would have to say he likes my BM 880 darkstar best. Its a right handed stud though.

The new BM AFCK is completely swappable.

Perhaps you should, however, refine your price range a bit. What one person considers "spending all my money" might be a stocking-stuffer trinket for another.

I'd say it's time your brother gets over his aversion to the Spydie hole and buy him a plain-edge FRN Delica or Endura. Either one is a great folder for a "lefty". If he doesn't like the gift, keep it for yourself and buy him a banana.:).

This reminds me of something I read awhile ago about the Inuit. Their children start from when they were practically infants, around 2 to 3 years old, learning how to use small knives. Something to do with impressing the skills of a tool, that was intrinsic to their survival, as soon as possible on the young. I could remember the caption for a photo of how a couple of small children were carving whale blubber to feed themselves from the carcass. Cute.

Anyways, I digress... depending on the age of your brother, I favour a working knife over a tactical one if I was in your shoes. Much more versatile.

Sounds like the kid is into folders. Off the top of my head, maybe something from Cold Steel's Voyager line ( non serrated ) would be a good start. They have sales on their items all the time online at the various dealers.

Anything else, other than Spyderco, and the price keeps climbing quite steep. Would like to see what others think.

Just my 2 cents.

Alot of people don't like the Spydie hole, me included..;)

It's nothing more that personal opinion though, they are nice knives for sure.....:) I do have one, it was a gift....but it has a serrated blade and the hole....2 negatives for me...;)

I bought my nephew a buck ranger 100 year anniversary knife it comes in a tin container nice knife for $27.00 at Wal-Mart.

You'll be looking at lockbacks and axis and arc locks.
As said, Gerber and Buck have some lockbacks worth looking into. BM 710 and the Griptillian would be a good choice too, but that depends on how much you want to spend. There are some sogs, like X-ray Vision that could be a good choice.
I think you should just bring him to a knife store and tell him how much you want to spend and let him choose one for himself.
Maybe even a small fixed blade would do the job. Camillus and CRKT makes some small fixed blades.

I also thought of CS Voyagers, but then his brother IS a "lefty", and the clips on Voyagers are on the wrong side for us "leftys".:(.

Yeah, i'll agree that a working blade is most likely the best starting place. And for money, it needs to be under $100. I am currently looking at the Griptilian the hardest. Thanks for the help guys much obliged

Well, dang...I didn't realize that Cold Steel had gone and re-named the "Voyager" as the "Recon 1"...Sorry, my bad..

No they didn't rename the Voyager the Recon 1.......;)

But the Recon 1 does have the reversable clip...you can put it on either side (3 Allen screws) unlike the Voyager series...

But the Recon 1 costs more than the Voyagers do, so that must have been why you were looking at the Voyagers in the first place....

My vote would be for one of the Kershaw Onions, like the leek or scallion - the "speed safe" opening will definately impress. A buddy of mine gave me his scallion to sharpen, and I couldn't stop playing with it, very trick opening system and is a liner lock.

Plus, you could toss in a Spyderco 204 sharpmaker and still be under $100.

But the linerlock is pretty right-handed, and I think his bro is a southpaw. Other than that, I'd concur.

Asha'man

if the spydies are out because of the hole than the griptilian is the way to go. I think BM are great and they use quality steel. BUY AMERICAN! :D
