Knife oil

Let's get this to the correct forum - Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment

Mineral oil. You can buy it at grocers and big box stores near the pharmacy. It's used as a laxative. Won't harm you if you with contact or injestion. Basically just baby oil without any added scent.

Breakfree CLP. Get it at most sporting goods stores and any gun shop. Cost is reasonable. Will not gum up. It "cleans, lubricates, and protects", CLP.

I want to throw Eezox® Premium Knife Care in here too

From Eezox.com: "Eezox Knife Care cleans, lubricates and prevents rust and fingerprinting. Knife Care dries to the touch leaving no oily film."

Only thing I ever found that beats "Breakfree CLP" although they are both great products.

If you are looking for something more universally usable have a look at Ballistol. It is not nearly as good (protection-wise) as the other two though.

I just read a thread and Eezox out performed a lot of the other oils.

That'll probably be my next purchase :P

I don't know if Eezox is as easy to find, or as affordable as Breakfree CLP. Obvious from the tests that it is good stuff. I have firearms so I use much larger quantities of lube than would the average knife collector just because of the size difference between knives and firearms. Breakfree CLP really can't be classified as an oil, it is lubricant with additional properties and will never gunk up or harden like oil will.

Here is a link to a corrosion test that may be of some interest.

Thanks for all the tips. While checking out all the tip I noticed that some are very expensive. And you only get about 8cc-15cc. If it only takes 1-2 drops and you only apply it once or twice a year it would last good 2 years. But I am constantly adding to my collection and I like to keep them ready to go at a moment's notice. So I guess I am going to have to weigh quality and cost of the quantity. Tuff decision, at least for me. Thanks again for all the recommendations.
