Love the old B&W westerns. Watching Cheyenne tonight and the bad guy whips out a pocket knife, flips it open and closes it with one hand. Looks like it had about a 4” clip point blade. I’m pretty sure a knife like that didn’t exist in the old west, but what about the 50’s when the show was filmed?

What episode was it?

Friction folders have been around a long time, so have switchblades. But I doubt that historical accuracy was ever a top priority for tv westerns.

I just watched the first 5 minutes (ain't the internet great), and it looks like a Schrade switchblade similar to this model, it's opened and closed by pressing the button. Schrade made several models that look like this. Definitely not period correct for a western.

For anyone interested, it's episode 15. Two different scenes with the knife in the first 5 minutes.

Or possibly a Remington. Near identical design.

Wow, now that’s an answer! Thanks.

Is that your knife in the photo?

Neither knife pictured is mine (I added another similar knife). But when I was a kid I had a similar Schrade switchblade just like the one pictured below. It was my first switchblade, a gift from my "cool uncle". I no longer have it, it was far from mint condition, and when the spring broke I eventually sold it to a friend.

Cool, I didn’t know Schrade made those. Thanks for the question and the information.
