Knife on International Space Station

While in DC this week (see other thread), I saw the Imax film at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum about the space station. It was a great flick, I highly recommend it.

In one of the scenes on the space station, one of the crew (I believe it was a Russian) was doing a repair on something when he pulled out a decent size folder and opened it one-handed with a flick of his wrist. It happened fast, so I did not quite see what knife it was. It looked like some sort of plastic handle (G-10?) and it appeared to have a Tanto point. Has anyone else seen the movie who can identify it? I wonder how the cosmonaut got it past security. Ironic that he could have one on the space station, but you can't have even a small pocket knife to watch a movie about the space station.

There are no knife laws in space, you just got to get it there without anyone seeing it :)

It would be interesting to know what he had and any of the others.

I going to Washington next week and was thinking about going to Air and Space. Have they stopped allowing all knives in the museum?

Great timing, Gadgetman7. I just went there a few weeks ago, with a little 3" (D.C. legal) SOG folder.

To my dismay, when I got there, I saw metal detectors at the front door. When I emptied my pockets, I just nonchalantly threw my folder in the basket, along with everything else. It was scanned, but I don't think anyone noticed the little blade in there. Everyone was busy asking me how long it took to grow my mohawk :)

I've also done this at a club. Slipped that same DC-legal folder into my boot (under my foot). The pat-down doesn't get it, and the hand-held metal detector beeped, but nobody noticed. Usually security is too busy asking about the mohawk to notice anything. I just put on a friendly smile, it gets you in anywhere without any trouble.

The Smithsonian Natural History Museum doesn't have metal detectors. They do have a security force there, I guess for selective pat-downs or metal detector scanning if you look fishy.

It's so sad how these restrictive rules/laws serve only to restrict the rights of citizens to defend themselves and carry tools. No determined terrorist is going to stop at the sight of a metal detector...

Yeah, wonder how long that'll last. Prob. until the first blissninny arrives there.

If my memory serves me will, it is an Emerson Specwar Tanto, plain edge, Black, with a special sort of gut hook ground onto the front edge especially for opening their vacuum sealed goodies.

A hell of a nice knife if you ask me. Heck, if it is good enough for those who literally have the budget to choose ANYTHING they want, well, I think that tells you something.
