I just ordered a scout jr and wanted to get some feedback. I'm thinking of going black canvas micarta with a blue liner. I'm also thinking of having all the pins hollow and aligned instead of just the one. What do you guys think? Blue liner too pimp? Hollow pins good or bad? I had also thought about going with green canvas micarta and no liner.

I havent been this excited about a knife in awhile. I have been thinking a lot lately about what my ideal field knife would be and this is as close as I have seen.

Congrats on choosing JK to make your first knife, you will enjoy it. Everybody has their own personal preferences in scales and pins. I prefer solid pins to hollow because of ease of cleaning. I also like the green canvas micarta as it "matures" into a rich brown over time. Check out my post that I just started, CC/S and C/S. Both knives are green canvas but the smaller one has 2 years of sweat, oil, and sun and the larger one is new, but should darken over time. Good luck with your choice.

I look forward to what the guys have to say to help you make your decision. (personally I`m a fan of black canvas micarta, but that`s just me) After you get all the details ironed out, send me an email at jkiedaisch@sbcglobal.net (PM`s are too hard to keep track of) Include stock thickness, handle choice, sheath type, and name and address. I look forward to hearing from you.

After the article came out in S.W.A.T. Magazine about my knives, I had a guy in the military call me about ordering a knife, and the Scout Jr. was born. Here is what the customer had to say about the knife.

I just returned from SERE School. I used this knife throughout the survival section of the course and the knife performed great. I used the knife for everything; from splitting wood for fire to cleaning game. I had a diamond sharpening tool and all I had to do was retouch the blade on the diamond stone and the knife was ready to skin anything. I would recommend any of John's products to anyone that needs a real knife for survival. These knives are made very strong and take a serious beating.

I am a big fan of black canvas Micarta and will be putting it on some of my knives. I like your idea of going all hollow tubes with the black canvas and blue liners. Do it, it will look great.

I have a few JK's in black canvas micarta, it is probably my favorite handle material. As far as pins go, I prefer solid ones for ease of cleaning, like JackHammer said.

However, hollow pins would be cool and I think the blue liner would really set it off.

John is a pleasure to work with, too. Fantastic customer service and a great guy.

Welcome to the JK subforum, Dennis.

Great input so far guys. I hadn't considered ease of cleaning and hollow tubes. I think I am sticking with them for the lanyard options they afford. And now the wait begins.

I like the black linen micarta - it has a finer grain and stays more black than the canvas.

The canvas has a rougher texture, which might be desired if the knife is going to be used in the wet etc., as that would give better grip.

I prefer hollow pins as they provide more options. You COULD lash the knife to a stick for an impromptu spear if one needed to (not that I have ever done this...)

I just like hollow better , but you will have a quality piece either way.

And if you like blue, go for it! It might become your signature specification. Welcome aboard.

Hey, nice choice!

I lean more towards wood for scales but micarta has it's advantages of course. I also favorite solid pins for the same reason as grunt, however I did read a thread once about a guy using hollow pins so he could lash his knife to sticks and such, never had much need for it myself but thought I'd mention it.

As well as setting of the scales nicely a liner is meant to make the metal under the scales more "waterproof" and therefore rustproof as it where but honestly a Jk isn't going to suffer from that kind of things anyway in my experience.

Either way, welcome to the Jk forum a and good luck with the wait, it'll be a tough one but worth it :)

FYI the picture thread here always helps m out with the wait :)

i prefer canvas micarta for the extra grip when wet - or when wearing gloves.
OTOH, I really like the look of the blue liner.
I also vote for hollow pins, despite the need to clean them occasionally.
