Knife organizing question

I'd like to know how everyone stores their EDC rotation knives.

I have one main rule when it comes to buying knives, I don't buy ones I won't carry or use. As such, I have about 20 pieces that I rotate on a regular basis depending on the days attire, what I'll be doing, where I'll be going and yada yada yada.

What I'm looking for is idea's on how you guys organize your carry knives so that at a glance you can pick the one(s) that you are going to take for the day.

I'm currently using a 60 year old Gerstner tool chest that I restored to store all of my knives in but it has 15+ drawers and going through each one to find what I want can be a challenge.

I have an old Gerstner too. I can't think of anything that would be better suited to the task.

I keep my favourite knives that i carry on a regular basis in pouches in a row on my dresser top. The pouches are pretty distinct so I know which one I'm reaching for. The rest are in boxes in a "knife drawer", the least-used knives at the bottom. No order to it, and sometimes I just close my eye and grab one

Most of the carry knives not on my person are sitting on a dresser near the bed. A few by the computer or on my desk. Less often carried knives in a BFC knife bag not too far away. If I had more than a dozen or so carry knives I'd need some way to store/organize them. Unfortunately I'm not fortunate enough to have problems finding places to keep my knives. One day, though, I'll have that dilemma as well, at which point I'll retreive this thread and reread it.

I agree that a Gerstner is probably one of the best-suited & nicest looking places to keep a collection -- especially the ones with the locking front panel. Unfortunately I tried to get by on the cheap and have learned my lesson. I bought a Chinese-made Gerstner knock-off through Ebay (I later found the same model at WalMart & Sam's Club)for around $150. Within a month, big cracks had formed in the sides and back, the felt was coming unglued and the front locking panel got stuck in place.

In retrospect, I should have either bought an old one & refinished it or saved my money until I could afford a new one.

Check AG Russell's catalog or web site for a nice selection from a reputable company.

I really like my Gerstner but I'm always looking for a better way to do things.

I'm sure I'll just keep using it but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on some other cool method of storage.

BTW - nothing really compares to the Gerstners in general, when I got mine it had been on the shop floor at the Rockwell Brake & Axle Plant in New Castle PA since it was new. The lower half was caked in old grease grime and someone had spray painted half of it with gold automotive paint. I stripped and degreased it, polished up all the hardware and refinished, the felt was all shot so I scraped it out and lined it in no slip rubber cloth. Unfortunately the locking front was missing and I've not had a chance to rebuild one. Now it looks and works as good as new.

I can say with confidence that regardless what you use it for, if you buy one you'll be able to hand it down for generations to come.

Like I said though, my only complaint is that when I want to find a piece in a hurry the 15+ drawers can be a challenge... and it's always in the last place I look

Is there no way to label the drawers/doors? Or, maybe you could alphabetize them? By maker or model name, or use a numbering system?

It might prove helpful to simply rid yourself of the less frequently used knives, or those you don't truly care for as much as the others. If that should be the case, I'll pay the shipping, and you can just send the effluvia to me.

Well, ya got me thinking about an old tool chest and the refinishing possibility to keep price down...

In the mean time, I bought 3 of these roll up cloth pouches from Knives Plus in Amarillo. They are called "Sack Ups, The Knife Protector (tm)".

They are very ugly, inelegant, inexpensive, and functional. They are made out of gray cotton, and silicone treated, and have varying sized little pockets for different sized knives. Since the top of the knife generally sticks out, I can quickly tell which knife I'm grabbing for.

I have 3 of these in one of my drawers... well, my dresser, not my "drawers" like my skivvies (are ya just happy to see me, or is that ...)

www.google.com yields a bunch of sources, here is one that has pics. A cheap, inelegant, functional solution.

Now...where can I find an old Forstner chest to refinish...

On shelfs, by the computer, around my bedroom, generaly speaking. The only exeption is a knife that a friend loans me. That is stored safely in a draw. When not in use

Thanks Rdangerer, I'm going to order the 12 knife bag. Not really for use at home but while I travel. I think that would be a great thing to have when I'm away from home.
